I know that LSU's "fair catch" strategy this year caught a lot of criticism, but it's like this around the country.

The whole game is analytics now and punt returns have been deemed too risky. Not to mention the punters are way better at placement.

In 2017, the national leader in punt returns (not yards, just returns) had 40 punt returns. In 2023 the leader had 28 punt returns - a 30 percent decrease in just 6 years.

So don't expect LSU to start returning a bunch of punts next year, especially if the offense is still rolling.

I hope they never phase out, I like it when you need the points are somewhat forced to take the risky play and return one.

Chad Jones is crying somewhere.

Most returns have an illegal block that negate the yardage.

If they would implement the NFL rule it would drastically improve the punt return effectiveness.

Is DJ Chark's return vs Auburn in 2017 the last punt return TD that LSU had?

Maybe Trey Palmer had one against a directional school in 2020?

Punt returns are being fair caught way more often than they used to be, but we are still absolute bottom of the barrel in them and could be much better.

LINK

6 teams this year had 2 punt return TDs. Another 36 teams had 1 punt return TD. We had less than 100 punt return yards all season long. Thats the 2nd season in a row we've had under 100 punt return yards all season long. 26 teams had at least 200 punt return yards this past season and 31 teams had at least 200 punt return yards in 2022.

We've got a lot of room for improvement there. Is it hugely game impacting? Obviously not near as big as offense/defense, but its something with solid coaching and someone who knows how to return a punt can get A LOT better

Why not just ditch the returner and bring all 11 for the block?

well most punters run off to the side and then kick allowing for the coverage to get down the field more. I swear years ago flags were thrown if the blockers didn't block for a few seconds before covering the kick.

In the NFL only the two gunners are allowed to leave the line of scrimmage before the ball is punted.

I’d like to know if they factored in that the new punt formations discourage better returns.

It seems like you don’t see good returns.

I could be mistaken because maybe your post already highlights it; no one returns anymore.

Still would like to know if the punt teams are just better than they were.

This is a large part of it. Watch how many punter gauge the pressure before actually kicking.

A lot of it also has to do with 60 year old white guys trying referee a game played by 20 year olds, that they're trailing 20-30 yards behind.

Field position is one of the most overrated and useless things in all of modern football unless you're talking about the extremes. The outcome of having the ball at your own 20 vs your own 27 are pretty much identical. If you have an offense that moves and scores at will the only important thing is securing the catch or making sure it doesn't roll inside the 10 where field position actually matters some.

They should put a trashcan about 45 yards down field. No returner but normal rush. If the punter can land it in the trash can they get 1 point. Otherwise the receiving team gets the ball where it lands the first time.

That's coaching.
