Take it from a guy that has followed LSU football since the NC of 58'. The toughest pound for pound was the South Lafourche Badass..............AARRTTHHUURR CCAANNTTRREELLEE. Hands down! End of story! No one else even close!

I am surprised no one has mentioned Joe Labrusso, the little running back from the mid 1960's. I don't remember his exact size, but I worked with him in construction one summer. He couldn't have been bigger than 5'6" and maybe 160 lbs. He was all muscle and was one tough son-of-a-gun RB. He was a one man wrecking crew against #1 ranked Arkansas when LSU beat them in the 1965-66 Cotton Bowl 14-7. He scored both LSU touchdowns rushing.

Joe Labruzzo.
Tough!!!Tough!!!!Tough!!! Another Tiger from 'Down da bayou'.
Sadly, committed suicide in later years.

Props to Banks, but he was no Hester.....not even close
He was never given the chance. DeNardo squandered his running abilities as a pure blocking fullback. A crying shame...He rushed for over 4000 yards as a fullback in high school to be put as a pure blocker a t LSU.

Gotta give JJ some love in this thread. While not the toughest of all-time, the dude takes a brutal beating and hasn't even come close to missing a game

If what my father told me about him is true, I would have to agree.

Considering the running backs on team it was a good decision.

I haven't read the thread, and I won't for several hours, but "toughness" is not something we have a standard for measuring. I think most of it is character; the rest physical ability.
I think Jacob Hester is the one who comes to mind. I also think Art Cantrell should be in the conversation.
But, really, it's not fair to single out only a few that we notice. Especially since the ones we notice are the ball handlers.
OoooK. I just read the thread, and I am surprised. But, seriously, we have a whole bunch of tough competitors who really don't get recognized. To LSU!

How about Tommy Casanova?

Eric Andolsek
RIP
I see the Tommy Banks fan boys are still out.
I always thought that was funny on the radio show. No matter how many yards rushing we had people were calling in asking why we didn't give the ball to Tommy Banks.

...My vote is for Sammy Martin.
I've seen lots of Tigers in my day, but as the title of this thread says...
"Pound for Pound" he wins hands down

That would be Steve Rehage I believe--special teams specialist and the craziest mofo I've ever seen play the game. He would fly down the field on kickoffs like a guided missile, scary as hell.

Rehage: Apparently "crazy" was correct
According to people who attended LSU during that era - Rehage was dangerously unpredictable.
The problem for Cantrelle is he was dangerously predictable. That's probably a little scarier in the long run. Apparently when LSU or Baton Rouge police suspected Cantrelle was involved, it was a "calling all cars" event.
