I enjoyed reading the OP because it seemed to explain why I've enjoyed watching LSU so much this year.

You do understand running teams having better TOP are inherently penalized by Points per TOP equation?

Yes, which is why I left it out.

Understood.

For me I this discussion. You have done a great job to expose some of the misconceptions.

I don't understand why this isn't a more voiced statistic. It's not hard to calculate and if you put some SOS factors in there you have one of the most comprehensive stats.

Very nice work, a good fresh look at stats to glean some real meaning from them.

Good Stuff. I like this. What about sticking with what you originally calculated and adding the variable TOP.

Points Scored / yards / minutes = Explosiveness of Offense or should we say Explosiveness of Team since Defensive points are in these numbers.

LSU would be fourth in the BCS top ten by using this equation. Right behind Oregon,Houston,Okie state.

Disclaimer - quick calculations here.

So Arkansas' defense is on par with Houston and slightly better than Boise?

TOP hurts teams with good running games which is why I didn't include it. We discussed it above

I wouldn't go so far as to call us the best offense, but it's impressive nonetheless

If you cannot say best, perhaps you could say "most efficient"

A team that leads in stats such as these may not be flashy because it doesn't necessarily put up a lot of points.

That doesn't mean the team isn't good or even great, just more efficient in their scoring.

Since the media is all about scoring points on offense and limiting them on defense, that team just may not be as good for discussion as one that does otherwise.

You and lsumatt should have a love child together. I surmise the kid would be the Rantard equivalent of Good Will Hunting.

That is outstanding work

I didn't read all 4 pages so it may have been suggested, but you might consider doing Yards per Point so you're dealing with real numbers instead of thousandths and tens of thousandths in decimals. Either way, very impressive

That was my suggestion. Same data, better numbers, and it's already out there without having to do the work

i enjoyed this post b/c it was possibly the perfect example of confirmation bias, which this thread had a ton of

I was fiddling around with looking at LSU's average starting position when we start a scoring drive, which is pretty relevant to what you have here. I never got really far because I didn't know a good way to gather all that data. If anyone knows a good way about this, I think it would be pretty enlightening as well.

One thing I'm not sure has been brought up in the thread yet is, isn't this stat highly correlative to Turnover Margin? Not sure if we are leading in T/O margin but I know we are up there, and that would contribute to our better field position from our strategic punting.

Thoughts?

P.S. Nice work btw
