The point of it is to ensure that these players get some form of an education since the success rate in the MLB is so small.

Not sure if anyone said it but you can go pro in baseball after 2 years in JUCO too.

If you go JUCO route you are eligible immediately for draft as well.

Alex Fernandez for Miami along time ago had a monster fr year at the U, transferred to Miami Dade and went pro after so year rather than having to stay in college two more years, was drafted by White Sox.

This was kind of my point, it is easy to come back and finish when you've already completed 3 years worth of course work. A lot harder when you've only done 1.

18 year old would go pro, not get drafted damn near 100% of the time. And the one that does get drafted might get killed by the likes of LaRon Landry, Urlacher, Lewis, Harrison. Simply wouldn't be safe to allow it.

Not necessarily, the league would just evolve a farm system, players could be recruited but then sign if drafted, and we would be sitting here bitching about how the best prospects in SEC country go pro out of highschool.

Nothing is forcing the university to give these players scholarships.

Nothing is forcing these players to forego the draft and commit to 3 years of college.

There was a rule that if you were drafted out of JUCO, the mlb club retained your rights until the next draft even if you went and played for a NCAA school.

A pitcher for UNO had been drafted by the Cubs out of a jr college the draft before he enrolled at UNO. After UNO's season was over, he signed with the Cubs the day before the next draft.

This, like the one & done rule for college basketball players, is not a NCAA rule. Both come from the MLB & NBA collective bargaining agreements. As for it being senseless, I like the "protection" having to go to college for 3 yrs offers a kid. A report in Baseball America said that 5% of MLB prospects make it to the bigs. That's a 95% failure rate, so having 3 yrs towards a college degree makes sense to me.

The one year college rule for basketball makes filling out a bracket more of a gamble thus more people participate and spend more money.

That's why some kids go JUCO. You can leave after 1 year.

Yea, I think basketball should do what baseball does. One and dones are hurting the college game IMO. Does nothing for the student-athlete either. Because if you know you are leaving after your freshman year, don't you only need to worry about going to class and getting certain grades for the 1st semester?
