So you can go to MLB straight from HS but if you enroll in college you have to wait 3 years?

Whats the story here...

if you turn 21 before a certain date like Kevin Gausman, you can leave after your sophomore campaign....otherwise it's 3 years...which is what we have with him

Yes, either three years removed from high school or if you are 22 before a certain date you are eligible then as lemahieu and gausman were most recently

I'm shooting from the hip here, but I believe that "certain date" is within 90 days of the MLB draft

Obviously its a win for college baseball. But whats the logic with allowing an 17-18 y/o HS kid enter MLB and not a 19 or 20 y/o with a couple years of college ball under his belt?

Yes but at least its consistent. The MLB rule says that hs kid is ready but a frosh/soph in college is not ready..

No story, it's a rule.

And it should be the same for Basketball.

It hurts universities to have a person come there and then bail after a year. It also proves that education has nothing to do with them being at school. It is embarrassing to the universities and completely negates people's arguments about getting an education.

US colleges aren't the only breeding ground for MLB players. A decent % of drafted players come from other countries. You couldn't force them to go to college. The only way to work that out I guess is to say you have to be 21 to be drafted at all no matter where you come from.

Not it doesn't. It says you agreed to come to college, now you have to stay there if you want to continue playing baseball. Just because they aren't allowed to go to MLB as a sophomore doesn't mean they aren't ready.

To add the other layer....all juco players are eligible, regardless of class.
