A lot of the media outlets are saying/printing that Miles is feeling the heat for 2010.

How many coaches (in college or the NFL) have fought off the hot seat and got their program cranking again? Also how many coaches have been fired from one program and found strong success somewhere else?

In the NFL I remember Tom Coughlin was on the verge of getting fired before the Giants made that run to win the Super Bowl against the Pats a few years ago.

Belichick was fired from the Browns early in his career. Pete Carroll was fired from the Jets in the 90s.

I know there have to be more.

Joe Paterno was on the hotseat in 03-04 going 3-9 and 4-7. He followed up with an 11-1 season in 05 and #3 final rank.

Gene Stallings comes to mind. Doubt there are many though. Fired by TAM in the 70's. Probably a lot more Hot Seat guys that turned it around. Here is to Les being one of those that does.

These are all good examples. But LSU gives a wholly different meaning to the concept of "hot seat" for football coaches. It's worth pointing out that Miles, going into his 6th season, is the longest-tenured head coach at LSU since Charlie McClendon, who became head coach almost 50 years ago. If you eliminate McClendon and Bo Rein from the statistics, the average tenure of an LSU football head coach is just a few months over 3 years. The LSU fan base is, and always has been, the most delusional among major college football programs. It believes, incorrectly, that Louisiana produces significantly better talent than any other state or region. Sure, Louisiana produces good high school football players, but to say that it is materially better than California, Texas, Pennsylvania, West Virgina, or any number of other states is, well, delusional. The fan base believes that with the "talent" available, LSU should never have a losing season and should never endure more than one, or at most two , years without contending for conference or national championships. The fan base believes that, because they played peewee football, or they had a cousin whose wife's uncle's grandfather was a walk-on at NLSU, they know way more than any johnny-come-lately head coach. It isn't a coincidence that even the most successful coaches (see, in this regard, Saban, Arnsparger, Dietzel) can only tolerate the absurdity for a limited period of time before moving on. The LSU coach will always be in the "hot seat" until the fan base gets real. And until that happens, the only quality coaches (Les Miles aside)whom LSU will be able to hire are ones who begin looking for their next job about 15 minutes after they arrive.

This is correct. Your post is spot on and one of the best I've read in months.

I laugh at LSU fans making fun of the positive delusions that Bama or Ole Miss fans have. LSU fans have at least 10x the delusions that those fan bases have, albeit they are of the negative variety.

I appreciate the comment. That having been said, I fully expect LSU to rammer jammer that yellow hammer up the Tide's backside this fall.

Mack Brown was on the hot seat prior to Chizik and VY coming on the scene. He was owned by OU for a long while.

One could now argue in some ways his job is more secure than Stoops...

I actually think there are many similar characteristics between Miles and Brown with both being overall managers heavily dependent on quality assistants for success.

Tubberville looked to be on his way out until he went undefeated.

I personally don't see Miles on the hot seat anyways. He would have to have a horrible season and miss a bowl which would get any coach fired at an elite program.

I remember when LSU fans were giving Saban shite during the season following the national title '03 year. Fans are never happy.

All those that think a 9-3 season is mediocre when 2 of the losses came against the #1 &#2 teams in the country. All those that think wins over Arkansas, Auburn and Georgia are not solid wins because they have no talent and LSU has way more talent. All those that think we beat "no-one" last year. All those that think Miles sucks because of all the "talent" he has and has ONLY won 2 SEC West Titles, 1 SEC Title, 1 BCS National Title and 2 BCS Bowl Titles in 5 years.

Your post was decent up until this statement. Sounds to me you just pulled this out of your arse. No LSU fans say this.

In fact, some LSU fans think that Louisiana hasn't produced much talent the past few years, which is their excuse as to why we have been thin at OL and DL.

Tubberville was on the hot seat after being preseason #1 in 2003 and having a 8 win season. Auburn was actually interviewing coaches behind his back the week before the Auburn/Bama game in 2003. He beat bama that year to stop the bleeding and went on to remove himself from the hot seat in 2004 going undefeated in the midst of people claiming the program was in a downward slide.
