I'll be giving an oral presentation on a couple of families from Covington, LA next month. One of the families is Mike Williams (LSU All American DB). I had a nice visit with Mike last week.

1) Mike was the first African-American to play in Tiger Stadium, but his room mate was the first African-American to sign a scholarship to LSU. Does anyone remember the other players name?

2) Nickname for Cholly Mac's O-line .. was it the Lunch Bunch?

Mike tells the story of his roommate and he at a bar in Tigerland playing foosball, when a patron objects to the two black men being in the bar. However, before things can get ugly, the all-white Offensive Line picks the young man up and "escorts" him out of the bar. "They always had our back."

Much Appreciated for any help.

Lunch Bunch was Stovall's 1982 and 1983 OL.

Not to be pedantic, but Williams was LSU's first black to play at Tiger Stadium in 1972.Not "the first black."Unfortunately for him he was in the last class where freshmen were ineligible for varsity.

HE spoke at the gridiron club meeting a month or so ago and told the same story--I just can't remember his name.

Thanks .. and in the article Lora had a quote that echoed Mike W's sentiment:

quote:

"Through the ages, me and my teammates, we all got along, all of that, that's all past stuff," he said. "It's because of them that I was able to get past all of that, (the) fears. I had great teammates."

Lunch Bunch was later. Maybe mid 80's.

Lora O. Hinton or Mikell Williams (<- obviously this is Mike Williams of the OP).

Meh. I was pretty young back then, but I don't recall this. I thought "Lunch Bunch" was a Stovall thing.

Mike Demarie and Tyler Lafauci would have been on that 1971 team - 2 cats with whom you would not want to frick. OL weren't overgrown like they are today. They made up for it with meanness - guards, particularly were more like linebackers in their disposition.

I was just a youngin, but I memorized the roster, as kids will do. ISTR he made All-American at 5-11, 220. Robert Dugas was a pretty big dude, although not by today's standards. And they had a guy who was about 6-6, 270-a giant by standards of that era-but he didn't play much.

Robert Dugas was a member of the offensive line in the late 70s. He is one of the offensive linemen that Charles Alexander gives credit for being inducted into the Hall of Fame. That group was called the "Root Hogs".

Casanova and Estay were on that team.

Both holdovers from the awesome defensive '69 team

You could probably also talk to Collis Temple - first black basketball player at LSU. He's in BR and has some good stories.

There's a theory that because the games started later, the late afternoon-early evening showers had time to come and go. If it's going to rain in late summer and early fall, it's going to be around 6-ish.

Thanks .. I had wondered this myself. To be clear, we're saying there were black players who played in TS before Mike, but they were on the other team?

Root em on root hogs. I remember when Williams slipped against Bama in 73 and they scored. I was a freshmen then.

Didn't we beat Colorado 16 to 7 in 1973?

Actually in 1971, the season opener was at home vs Colorado and Charlie Davis(black player,CU had many and had had for a while) had a huge game.Lets just say he "Buffaloed" his way over LSU that night.
