October 28, 2008 (from Joe Alleva)

“Les Miles is one of the most successful coaches in America and he has the LSU program in position to compete for championships each and every year in the most dominant football conference in the country,” Joe Alleva, vice chancellor and director of athletics said Friday afternoon. “He recruits at an elite level, his players graduate and he is a respected member of the community. We are proud he will lead the LSU football program for the long-term future.”

Here's what I don't understand: "The board approved Miles’ contract amid school budget cuts and an overall restructuring of the university, in part, to save money." LINK

It's possible Alleva doesn't know what the hell he's doing and should never have been hired.

Quite possible, which is why many warned about playing with matches here. I still believe that Bertman having had to manage a team at this level knew what qualities to look for in a head coach and he had good advisers/contacts to help him filter out the most important attributes to making this type of decision. You need someone who knows what they're doing to make the right moves rather than just any move. If you don't have the right AD, this could take as long as the AD is still over the program.

So Les Miles could be gone, you still have to have had a plan in place. A coach in place. It shouldn't just be an open season sort of thing. The infrastructure of the team (Frank Wilson and Orgeron) should be preserved. We don't even know if that's Alleva's thought process.

Miles' last raise was about $300K. Herman is being bumped from $1.5 million to $3 million. Sumlin makes $5 million. That's the bar for a new-hire today at a program like LSU. We could probably hire Herman today for the same $4.3 million, but we could not get Jimbo Fisher in here for less than $5 million. That would appear to have "saved" money if you look at the long-term effects.

No shite.

LSU has painted itself into a corner. This isn't about Fire Miles or Keep Miles.

At this point, you cannot keep him. You have hung Miles out to dry the last two weeks. Nationally playing out in front of recruits, other coaches etc.

He's a lame duck if you keep him. So now, LSU basically has to let him go IMO. Unless the entire staff stays as is. And that won't happen either.

So LSU/Alleva has the football program in a spot that major change is set because they themselves put all this info out there.

Now if they have their guy already, ok.

But for anyone who works in the real world, they know no one is lined up yet, esp a current HC at a Power 5 school. Just stupid to think that.

This got 100% out of hand. We'll see but dark times ahead IMO

I've said this all along about the Miles hire. Bertman knew what to look for in a person. Dude knows winners. He saw that in Les. Yeah he didn't have a great record, but OSU sucked. Bertman saw something more than just the record when hiring Les. And at that time, it was the rt hire.

Alleva didn't leak it, a coach did.

It was leaked because it was going to be hard to fire Les when he was bringing in the #1 recruiting class for next year. They leaked it to sabatogue the recruiting class so they could take that chip off of Les's table.

We assume it got out of hand. They may have played this just like they wanted. Alleva also probably getting catch back on Miles for that contract extension.
