Anthony Johnson played worst each year in our current system. Seems like Haley did nothing with him while AJ was here. Outside of QB, DL and LB should have been the main focus in recruiting and it wasn't.

Better line play makes our already good secondary great.

I can't remember the last time LSU had Defensive Lineman that had 10+ sacks per year.
I don't think that's ever happened.

Exactly but other schools have players that are not has heavily recruited putting big sack numbers
look at clemson or mizzo or even sorry arse A&M when they had Von Miller I can go on and on..

Spears had 9 in '04
Sam had 9 in '11 and 8 in '12.
Still searching . . .

Garrett is like Mingo except Garrett is a sack machine. I would have to think it is coaching. Our players need someone to teach these guys.

LSU season sacks leaders
12 Oliver Lawrence 1989
11 Gabe Northern 1994
10 Rydell Malancon 1981
Only three with => 10 sacks/season. (ref p. 155 of the 2014 Media Guide)

impressive, didn't realize he ever got that many.
I think 9 is the most you're gonna find for a DL.
in fairness to Brick, our DEs in Chavis' scheme aren't necessarily the focus of the pass rush as they are in some other defenses. any of the front 7 in the mustang - 3 DL, 2 LBs or slot DBs - could come free or drop into coverage, and a lot of times the DL would free up some of the faster guys to rush. still we were terrible getting to the QB this yr. Hunter especially, and weirdly because he had a good TFL total.

guess I didn't go back far enough. I stopped at the 95 stats. Geaux Gabe.

Rules favoring the offense and innovations in offensive schemes have changed defensive stats. The last three years very few defenses hold people to less than 300 yards anymore on average. I believe LSU has ranked in top 25 in defense YPG nationally since 2002...maybe I'm wrong but not by much.

It's hard to recruit a defense in this day and age that will be tailored to stop it all. In recent years LSU has recruited guys to stop the spread...Saban, viewing Lsu as his main competiton year in and year out, has recruited guys to stop lsu.
The results of that are obvious. Lsu is typically better than Alabama at defending spread teams, alabama is typically better than Lsu at defending power teams. Ideally you recruit some of each or find guys that can defend both. When you recruit cookie cutter players you're setting yourself up to get gashed by a style you aren't built to stop.
Play calling is just as important as recruiting though. I don't think recruiting should be the top attribute of a coordinator. There are a dozen position coaches that you can hire to recruit. A great athlete is useless if the coach has him in the wrong spot. (See third and Chavis, or third and Smart nowadays). Hiring a recruiter and putting him in a play caller role is a pretty big gamble, particularly in this league. Every team you face has great athletes, and there are coordinators with a lot of experience calling plays. When guys like that are facing recruiters in a chess match on Saturday the odds aren't in your favor.
The example used in the OP doesn't lend much for compare and contrast. I see 3 well respected coordinators and ten years of talented defenses. Basically it's been the same for a decade. Hiring a guy that's a recruiter and doesn't have play calling experience would be something entirely different from the last 3 coordinators it seems.

that is why we want to bring CP WITH coach O.

Disagree. Brick is the hold up until Miles can work something out with an admin. position for another coach. I'm sure it takes approval above Miles head to ad expense admins.

BTDD: Stoops isn't a threat to Miles if hired. CP and O would dominate discussions of a coaching change if brought to LSU. Do you think Miles is going to want this?
I was thinking the exact same over here. Let's hope that if he has a real shot at Coach O & P that he does the right thing which is what's best for the program. If he'd rather take a less talented coordinator because he is afraid if competition...I mean, isn't that what he pitches to recruits? He shouldn't be coaching anymore if that's the case. But I doubt it is. I say if they have a shot at those 2...take it

Realize the change in offensive philosophy across the NCAA during that time.
Spread offenses were gimmicky in 2004. Hell, they were called system qb's and laughed at.
tl;dr: don't kid yourself.
Didn't we play oregon that year? that defense dominated that arse. It's players. That defense would dominate their arse again. Hard to run the zone read when brockers or logan is in the backfield tackling your arse. it's hard to bust a long run when mingo is running down fast guys like Lamichael james.
