Multiple sources on Friday told Baseball America that Paul Mainieri has emerged as the initial target to replace Link Jarrett as coach at Notre Dame.

The move would be a homecoming for Mainieri, 64. He coached Notre Dame from 1995-2006 before leaving for Louisiana State, where he won the 2009 national championship. He retired at the end of last season after 15 years at LSU, in part citing neck pains and headaches that had affected him for a couple years.

Mainieri is the eighth-winningest coach in Division I history. He has won 1,505 games in his career, including 533 at Notre Dame. He led the Fighting Irish to the 2002 College World Series and made eight straight regional appearances at the end of his tenure in South Bend. He coached premium talent at Notre Dame, including two of the five first-round picks in program history (Aaron Heilman and Brad Lidge).

Interesting. Maybe he feels like he can do it after a year off.

Could just be he didn’t want the pressure of CWS or bust anymore. Failure this season since we began #8 but you’re allowed more than 1 year. 5 years though is a joke. I have faith CJJ will have us there next year.

Wasn’t a first rounder believe he was a 5th rounder.

Would be quite surprised if he did that. But I do fully believe that he didn’t actually want to retire and the neck pain was just a good excuse. He knew he was sinking at LSU and wanted out before the pitchforks came out.

Where did link jarret go? He seemed incredibly happy at notre dame and was always emotional when he was interviewed about his team in the postseason.

Maybe he was so emotional because he already knew he wasn’t gonna be back next year.
I’m guessing he retired? He’s not that old though so idk what happened

Me too. I know he looks up to Ron Maestri who went back to UNO in 2014 after many years away from coaching. Maestri went 11-38 and 14-40 in 2 seasons before retiring again. Then again, Paul is younger and would inherit a better program.

I dont think its a good idea for either party. Pauls best days are past him. And i doubt he can live up to what Link just did over the last 2 years

Maybe the PM lovers can become Norte dame fans, since they love PM above LSU
