Among the 14,000 state bid contracts. Nothing to cut there.

Yup it's called economic growth. Speaking of which, you do know that business don't have to stay in a state with high corporate income taxes right? You do know that citizens can leave for states with lower/ no income taxes right? You do know that we can choose to buy stuff elsewhere as opposed to paying inflated sales taxes right? Of course you do!

Those people should have their voter registration revoked.

Ok, since you have such a thorough, in-depth understanding of what the state government picture looks like and the path to move forward, which contracts should the state cut? And what would be the next step of cuts that that need to happen when your magical contract cullings fall extremely short of what is needed? And then what steps should be taken when those cuts don't even begin to come close to closing the hole that the state was left with from our previous governor? Can anyone with a reasonable amount of common sense or intelligence really try to argue that they thought that this year wouldn't bring tax increases and that it wouldn't be painful? The fat that people want to cut just isn't there and even the meat has been cut more deeply than most think. But people just don't get this because the so infrequently think for themselves and let the parties do their thinking for them.

Here is the problem- most people do not have any idea what drives the economy and what will drive the economy into the ground
The first move any business does when faced with economic downfall is expense cutting, the second move is to develop revenue streams which is not the same thing as increasing revenue- a Revenue stream is NEW business-
You create new business by creating a climate that will make customers spend money with you instead of the competition
A company that seeks to solve its problems by simply increasing prices will just exacerbate its financial decline

And how do you propose the state government develops new revenue streams?

How can anyone say this as millions are being cut as the tax increases from this session weren't enough to cover the gap.
So you are saying our state budget is now less than Georgia?
We live like Mississippi but spend billions on billions more. Why is that?

How many taxes have actually expired in the past and not just renewed? Certainly not many.

Sadly this tax also applies to fundraisers at Church's. We do fundraisers to help pay for our children to go to camp.
Way to go JBE, very disappointed
I did hear the gov was going to try and change this??

If that is the case, they are voted upon. New taxes are voted upon. This is an existing tax that has always been there, just exempt. I don't understand the uproar like the governor is shoving this down the publics throat for the hell of it.
It's a very minimal tax/impact on the public. It's temporary. It's been approved by voters for years. The State was doing the public a favor by having the exemption and the State can't afford the handouts right now.
For those who bitch and moan about handouts and entitlements, stop complaining about paying the basic sales tax on something that you've been getting a free ride on for years.

Georgia is another great example. They have significantly higher corporate taxes, but get more large business developments because of the ease of paying their taxes. Our tax code is very complex. Most corporates don't mind paying a little more if they don't have to jump through as many hoops. You broaden the base with income tax and sales by removing loopholes, exemptions, and the need for refunds. If EVERYONE paid something whether it be 1%, 5%, or 8% (I'm just making up numbers, nothing significant about these) income tax wise it would be a start. Also eliminating sacred cows like the homestead exemption( which our's is way high), would be a huge step. Personally I wouldn't have a problem with taxing property rather than income. It's far more predictable and easier to budget with. Bottom line, we need a more predictable and fair tax code both for business and individuals.

You make your state business friendly and create an environment that attracts new business to your state.

I still blame Jindal. Had that little shite not soured people the way he did by being an absentee governor, the door isn't left open for a snake like bell to slip through.
