I was in Hattiesburg for the MSU vs USM game and this is what I saw:

Offensively:
Dak is Dak, the guy can run. The positives pretty much ended there. Dak missed many throws, he doesnt seem to be very good when forced to throw from the pocket. He even had trouble completing bubble screens. The O line was not very impressive, USM's Dline was able to make plays in the back field against both the run and pass. The running backs are big and run hard but they werent game breakers by any means. It seemed like the Dawgs were trying to protect Dak in the first half because they called only one zone read and it was when they were backed up inside their own 10 yard line. With the score only 14-10 at the half, MSU realized just how average their offense is without Dak's legs. not to mention that those 14 points came on a KR for a TD and a very short field after a blocked punt, the MSU offense was anemic without the threat of Dak running the ball.

Defensively:
The Dline looked really good in the first half but looked dog tired by the time half time rolled around. The linebackers were OK, they made some plays early on but the longer the game went, the weaker this unit seemed. The Defensive backs were unimpressive to say the least. USM was able to dink and dunk their way to first down after first down. USM also had some success hitting seam routes and rail routes. The true weakness of this unit though is their conditioning. In the first half, USM really controlled the TOP and it showed. Runs that were stuffed for no gain in the first quarter were gong for 7-10 yards toward the end of the half. The only reason USM didnt score more points is because their Oline was having a lot of trouble controlling the MSU pass rushers and once Dak started running, they had to abandon their ball control gameplan.

Special Teams:
Their ST were very sloppy. Aside from that one kick return for a TD, this unit looked awful. Their really isn't much to say except they need work.

Obviously this is an assessment from one game so take it with a grain of salt but I am very confident that the Tigers will take it to the Dawgs on Saturday and bring home a victory.

LSU-31
MSU-17

Corners for Msu looked awful. Some of those throws from Southern were prayers and somehow were caught. Msu looked very underwhelming but I think southern is a lot better/scrappier then anyone will give them credit for.

They have four wins in the last two years.

southern didnt have a bad team at all. i really like their defense, those guys were nasty. they have a few players that will knock the piss out of you. i really think they were a better Oline from winning that game.

Two comments: The dawgs were obviously playing vanilla on offense to a large extent. The other being until LSU actually stops Dak, he's still capable of beating us by himself, like he did for the most part last yr. LSU's offense has to keep him off the field, like it will next wk again aubbie.

USM is getting better and this is the first year in several years that they have a full contingent of football players. The coach is recruiting very well and I expect them to compete for a bowl this year.

MSU looked very vanilla to me. I expect them to throw everything at us.

While Dak is good, he's certainly not capable of beating LSU by himself. He had that stout O-Line that gave him all day on the 3rd and longs, and constantly caught our linebackers out of position.
Their O-LINE was hit hard and our linebackers should be much better with Beckwith in the middle.
I expect him to seem very "pedestrian" this year, similar to JFF in his outings versus LSU.
I would've felt better to have the warm up game under our belts, but I'd still feel pretty confident betting the house on anything favoring LSU by less than 3.

The good news is Chavis is gone and Aggie probably loses to State. Chavis apparently had no idea how to stop Dak running. 208 rushing yards for Dak in the past 2 games against LSU.

Technically it's 4 wins in 3 years if you go back to the Ellis Johnson debacle.

I'm pretty sure Beckwith was yet to be installed at full time MLB by MSU last year. That obviously will make a HUGE difference this time around.

This is correct. He played some snaps but certainly wasn't the Beckwith that showed up against Bama.
Those 3 (I think) absolutely killer 3rd and longs that they converted would NOT have happened with Beckwith roaming the middle.

Dak won't beat LSU by himself!!!

That being said, we don't have to stop Dak.....we just have to put him in situations where he's not comfortable......MSU's only chance of winning is via the legs of Dak and ironically so is LSU's...........we have to force Dak into throwing the ball and being an efficient QB...........even if we have to sell out on the run.....!!!

I disagree to an extent. That offense runs through Dak. You have to make them beat you by forcing Dak to get the ball out of his hands quickly. He was way too comfortable last year running and throwing and that's what killed us.

No Welter, no care about State.

Back to business as usual against those dawgs.

ETA: great notes, thanks for taking the time to share you observations. my MSU-alum neighbor gave me close to the same info. Special Teams were PUTRID. And time of possession in the game was ridiculously tilted to USM.
