Just had conversation with someone who said the Vet school stated that Mike's Cancer would result in death in approx 1 month w/o medical intervention and that medical intervention would not cure the cancer, but rather the focus would be to prolong life 2-3 yrs.

I have not listened to or read the informational releases. If anyone has, can you advise if the above is accurate or crap?

My thoughts are....if he really is not curable, then maybe he should get a King's retirement now. I think it would be horrible if we watched him waste away.

Maybe a transitional period as he goes through this, we get a cub and about the time VI passes, VII would be a young adult Tiger ready to step into the role.

Dunno...food for thought. I'm sure there area ton of downvotes in the above, so feel free.

I dunno exactly. Make sure his last year or two is VERY comfortable. Not exactly up to speed on Tiger hospice care...but I don;t like the idea of dumping him the BR zoo like we did to previous Mikes

The thought of making him suffer for longer than he has too is hard for me to think it might be better to let him rest in peace.

My parents old cat had this type of cancer. Same place near the mouth and everything. The vet gave her an experimental drug that extended her life comfortably for almost a year if I remeber correctly. Id imagine the radiation therapy mike will receive is even more advanced. It is a fairly aggressive cancer.

frick. Cancer.

We had a dog that had a similar cancer. Started on the side of her face (like Mike's),but spread in that additional tumors began to pop up on other parts of her body. Because she was already 13 we didn't do chemo but tried to slow progression with steroids and other inflammatories. She lived about a year but wasn't in any real pain.

Instead of typing this crap out and starting this post, you should have read the stickied thread. What you are asking is in bold in the OP.

Lazy dumb arse.

Is he any more special than the previous Mikes?

This is the second thread that has mentioned retiring Mike. I asked in the first one but didn't get an answer so I'll ask again. What exactly is he retiring from? He is already in the best place he could possibly be. He is receiving the best medical care any tiger can get anywhere. What more can we do for him that we're not already doing?

I thought the article said 1-2 months no treatment, 1-2 years with treatment.

But none of that really means anything. I assume he could get treatment and still die before 1 year, or not get treatment and die in 4 months.

I would like the Ag school (in cooperation with the vet school) to set up our own tiger breeding program, for conservation and to supply other zoos, train experts in tiger care, etc., etc. As part of that, we could have a tiger hospice for our own retired tiger, so we would control all of that. We would breed and select our own mascots, provide them for other schools - mid-term we would have a goal of breaking even on the program, and long-term, maybe make a little profit.

It's not like TAF can't afford something like this. And, it's the right thing to do.

Being the "official" mascot of Louisiana State University. Of course, he would still receive medical care. But let's face it....having a LIVE TIGER mascot is largely propaganda and designed to representative of our strength, etc etc. As to THAT role the mascot has....a sickly cancer ridden Mike VI is unable to fulfill that role. So, yes....perhaps he should retire and we get a Bengal Cub who, by the time Mike passes, would be an adult.

Tigers are solitary animals. You couldn't keep them together.

As long as he's not in pain and has a decent quality of life, no need to be hasty. Presumably the vets will make the call when it's time to keep him from suffering.

maybe King should retire and we make Mike Prez. of LSU and show him the respect that he deserves. I dare John Bell Edwards to tell Mike what to do then.
