Fair enough, but part of not casting Mathieu's shadow over Eugene is refraining from saying things like this:
Comments like these invite the shadow.

The point is that Mathieu vaulted above players like Ron Brooks as a true freshman, and Eugene didn't.
There you go.
Is that really your argument? You know there is something called improving. And there is something called depth. So Eugene isnt going to be a more than capable player of filling in at the TM/nickle spot because he was RS and didnt vault himself above a 5th year senior who paid his dues and was key to the team last year? Makes a lot of sense.
We had 6-7 DBs who were older and more experience players than Eugene who have been in the system for multiple years, yet you think we RS him because he wasnt good enough to see the field as a true freshman on arguably the #1 D in the nation? You might be a smart man, but clearly you dont know that much about football and the GIFT that is red-shirting players.

My argument was that Mathieu faced pretty much the exact same situation (arguably a deeper depth chart, actually, with PP on the roster), and was simply too good to keep off the field.
But again, I will give Eugene his fair shake and I want him to do well, obviously.
I just want you people to cut out the "Mathieu wasn't that special" kind of crap because he definitely was.

In this thread, who said TM wasnt special? Nobody. That was just pulled out of thin air. Saying Eugene has similar instincts to TM doesnt undervalue what TM did. Not at all. In fact its a compliment to Eugene.

I agree that TM was too good to keep of the field, but as far as depth goes and TM faced the exact situation, i have to disagree. We knew Mo and PP would be the lock down CBs with Taylor at S. But those were the only positions that were locked down when TM was a fresh. Nickle and the other S spot were open. And it wasnt like TM was playing every down in every game as fresh. He beat out Brooks for the NB spot around the middle of the year and came on strong. Now, take a look at the depth at DB that Eugene would of had to fight through to get PT. There was no opening anywhere. Both S and CB spots were filled, as was the nickle and dime package. We literally had every package filled before the season started last year with proven players.
Nobody is undermining what TM did. Not at all. But your argument saying Eugene obviously isnt good enough because he was RS is invalid, pointless, and down right dumb.

Very good point here. This thread is truly an honor to both players.
And again, TM7 was hard to keep off the field b/c he brought to the field a "skill-set" that no one else did/does.
