We are coming into the game 1-0 after a 88-79 victory over BGSU on Friday in a game not quite as close as the score indicates. VCU is coming into the game 2-0 with a 72-58 win over Saint Francis (PA) and a 59-56 win over North Texas both at home. VCU was ranked in the AP Top 25 last week but fell to #26 this week in others receiving votes now.

VCU is picked to win the A-10 conference this year ahead of Davidson and Dayton. They went 25-8 last year making the NCAAT and winning the regular season A-10 championship, return 4 of their 5 starters from last year and most of the rest of the team beyond that.

This season they beat Findlay (a top DII basketball school) 88-80 in OT in an exhibition and they beat Tiffin another DII school (not so good one) 94-73 in a regular season game on Tuesday. Bowling Green was picked to finish 1st in the MAC East this year and were tabbed preseason champions as well, so this is a very solid team we're going up against. They are pretty deep and will likely play 10 guys. They are known for hard fought defense having one of the best FG% defense in the country last season and almost the best 3 point defense against.

VCU projected starters
C (6'7, 250) JR. Marcus Santos-Silva
PF (6'6, 200) rSR. Isaac Vann
SF (6'5, 210) SR. Mike'L Simms
SG (6'5, 190) SR. De'Riante Jenkins
PG (6'2, 190) rSR Marcus Evans

Santo-Silva is a returning big man from last year's VCU squad and operates like a true old school center never shooting up any 3's and doing a ton of work down low. He grabbed over 3 offensive boards a game last season and shot almost 60% from the floor. He had an extremely high 26.4 PER last season and is just a solid all around player who doesnt necessarily excel a lot in 1 thing (offensive rebounding lone exception) but does a lot of things very well and is very efficient.

Vann is a returning slightly undersized forward who takes care of the ball and finds other guys well for a "Big" guy. Don't expect him to dominate the glass or show a ton of athleticism but he shoot 3's and be a pest defensively for multiple players. Overall he was a slightly above average offensive player last season with a 16.4 PER.

Simms is the lone new starter in this group but still averaged 16 minutes a game last season and will primarily stay on the wings and shoot 3's. He was only a 29% 3 point shooter last year but has the size to give some players fits. He had a below par 9.4 PER from last season.

Jenkins is a returning starter from last year who fires up the most 3's of anyone on their team. He was still only 34% from 3 last year, as a team VCU was not good from 3 last year. He had an average 14.9 PER from last season.

Evans is a returning starter from last year who led the team in points, assists and steals. He is NOT a heavy assist type of PG rather more a scoring one. His AST:TO ratio was just 3.2:2.7. He is the guy that makes them go though and picks some pockets. He had a very good 20.5 PER last season.

Top Bench players
PF (6'8, 220) rJR. Corey Douglas
SG (6'4, 190) SR. Malik Crowfield
PG (6'3, 165) FR. Nah'Shon Hyland
SG (6'4, 185) SO. KeShawn Curry
SF (6'6, 210) SO. Vince Williams

Douglas was a part time starter last year and is the main big man who rotates in for VCU. Crowfield might be a familar name to some as he came from Riverside in LaPlace, he doesn't provide much offense but was the top 3 point man on last year's VCU team from a % standpoint. Hyland is a newcomer and big time recruit for VCU (4-star), he hasn't done much in the first 2 games but they expect him to blossom as the season goes along. Curry was a very lightly used freshman last season who they expect to play more this year. Williams is a hybrid 3/4 man who played a lot of minutes last year and that's not expected to change this year.

VCU is a really, really good defensive team and this is a very tough early road test for us. They dont out-talent us but they have the experience edge for sure, these guys have played a lot of basketball and while you wont see anything flashy, they could easily grind this game out and win. So far this year they've done a very poor job taking care of the basketball which has hurt their offense and we could certainly take advantage. I think the more this turns into a track meet the more to our advantage this game will be. We matchup very well size wise with VCU, but Watford down low will start out with a tough test in their big man. Going to be a war for rebounds between them.

Projected LSU Starting 5
PF (6'9, 235) FR. Trendon Watford - #2
PF (6'6, 240) SO. Darius Days - #0
SF (6'5, 200) JR Charles Manning Jr. - #11
SG (6'4, 205) SR. Skylar Mays - #4
PG (6'4, 205) SO. Javonte Smart - #1

Main rotational players
PF (6'6, 230) SO. Emmitt Williams - #5
SF (6'5, 210) SR. Marlon Taylor - #14 (Not Available tonight)
SF (6'5, 225) rFR. Aundre Hyatt - #15
PG (6'2, 190) FR. James Bishop - #10

Score Prediction: LSU 68 VCU 65

Jon Rosenthein said Marlon Will not play in this game.

Kenpom score prediction 74-71 VCU.

I'm a bit nervous how we will handle the road crowd but regardless this will be good prep for SEC play.

Don’t like this one either. We’ll have to handle their pressure. Marlon Taylor is out and will be re-evaluated Friday per Jon Rothstein.

Personnel-wise LSU and VCU look very much alike (in terms of size). The difference is in their strengths. VCU was one of the best defensive teams in the country last year and there's no reason to think that wont be the case this season. On the flip side, LSU was one of the most efficient offensive teams in the country last yer. While we only have one game (two if you want to count the game vs. Tech) of evidence, it appears LSU is on their way to being such a team once more (shot above 47% against both Tech and BG)

The question may be which team's "weakness" will be better? VCU shot it pretty well in their opener, but were poor in their second game (both at home). Conversely, LSU held both Tech and BG to 32% shooting from the field. It's probably unrealistic to think LSU can keep up that kind of pace, but if they can consistently hold teams around 40% shooting then LSU will be a tough team to beat.

Maybe the biggest single stat to watch is turnovers. VCU thrives off of turnovers. Unfortunately, LSU has been bad in that dept in its first "two" games (17 vs. La. Tech; 16 vs. Bowling Green)

If LSU can limit the TO's to 11 or less, then I think they have a good shot to win because I think LSU simply has enough guys who know how to score, even against tough defenses. But, if LSU turns the ball over then VCU and what is likely to be a very hostile crowd will feed off of it and mitigate any offensive advantage LSU has.

This is such a big game. I can't wait for it. Huge huge huge out of conference game that I really hope LSU is ready for. I think playing at Tech in preseason hopefully helps them get ready for a road test.

Not a ton of Tier A games in OOC besides this one so it'll be big for seeding purposes.

Understatement. The hate for Will Wade (and everything he's associated with) is real.

All the VCU fans I know have been looking forward to this game for a long time.

I for one will be decked out in Purple and Tigerbaiting everyone from the 2nd row. It's a Gold Out game for them.

Why does VCU hate Will Wade? Did he do something to piss them off, or are they just butt hurt b/c he left their program to go to LSU?

Also, what's wrong with Marlon Taylor? Is it an injury, or did he do something stupid in the offseason and he's just "suspended" silently?

From everything I've read on their boards they felt used. Like a guy who hooked up with a chick and didn't call her back afterward.

So were they expecting a good coach to stay at VCU and not move on to a bigger program? seems to be a very naive way of thinking if so.

It's a whole lot of pettiness and pent up anger all because someone took a better job than they had.

Anyone in their right mind would take a better job for more money in a better conference than stay put because IDK what?

St Louis U is going to have a good chance at the league title this year. They've got a very talented team. I'm thinking about going watch them play Seton Hall on Sunday.

ETA: I'm also glad I looked at the time to remember to set the DVR for the game.
