Yep. Rantards were scoffing at the idea of Martin playing in the pros throughout the course of the year. He EVENTUALLY shut them up, but it took awhile.

It was pretty silly and predictable..right about the same time Martin started to play to his strengths and Mickey started fading..they began to turn on Mickey

Jay Bilas must be a "loud mouth, wanna be analyst". In his first statements about the pick he wondered how LSU didn't win more games with those two players.

Great landing spot

eh, happy he got drafted but he's not gonna get much PT in Memphis and will have a tough road to being on the active roster, and it doesn't fill a need for Memphis. The last thing they needed was another decent shooting undersized PF. They needed perimeter shooters in a bad bad way. As an LSU fan I'm happy for him, but as a Grizz fan I'm a little disappointed that's the route they went with their 1st round pick

SHould probably book a flight to Iowa if you want to see him play much this year. He and Jarnell Stokes are in the same boat

If stokes made the active roster this year why can't martin? Stokes messed up his chance by picking fights in the d leauge. Don't see that happening to Martin. Plus we need some bench help when zebo goes out. Martin will learn from zebo it's a great fit!!

he wasn't on the active roster unless someone was hurt

so he was in the D league, where Martin will likely be

if you actually follow the Grizzlies, we do not need another player like Martin. We have plenty of guys of his skill set on the roster. i know it's cool to have a guy on the nba team you like that went to the college you like. i get that, and i think it's cool too. but at the end of the day, unless Martin blossoms big time in the next couple of years, I don't see him making much, if any, an impact on the Grizzlies' chances of breaking through in the West. We need guys that can shoot from the perimeter, not another player to clog up space inside 15 feet.

It's actually a terrible fit for the Grizz. He will not see the court next year at all. He will be in the D league

FWIW, I see Martin having a career along the lines of Brandon Bass. If that were to happen, that's pretty good value for the 25th pick.

yep, people in here will hate to hear that, though, and will downvote it

I think that the Grizzlies see potential in his jump shot. Also, the Griz just traded one bench forward and I can see Martin replacing JaMychal Green on the roster, not to mention Vince Carter is getting older. Jeff Green makes a lot of money and they may be looking to upgrade at a different position, allowing Martin to sneak in as a cheaper option.

@RandyRosetta: Ex-#LSU big man Jordan Mickey goes to Boston with the 33rd pick overall in the 2nd round. Two Tigers in same draft for first time since 1996

i really like Mickey's spot here. He is the only big man the Celtics picked up and they were the hosts of the NBA combines (? whatever they call them) so they had a very close look.

Vince Carter may not even be retained. He was a pretty big whiff last year, but he doesn't play the same position, so not sure how he's relevant. The Grizz also picked up Matt Barnes today. They have Kosta Koufos, Jeff Green, Jarnell Stokes, JaMychal Green, Jon Leuer, and now Martin all vying for a spot as a big coming off the bench. Now, any of those guys could be traded at any time this off season, but Martin has a lot of competition to even make the active roster. They may think he'll develop a jump shot eventually, but with Zbo not getting younger, Marc in his 30s, and Tony Allen in his 30s, they need to make a big splash in the next 2 years before they are going to have to completely rebuild that entire team.

Memphis need shooters who can make an impact off the bench right now. Martin is a project, a project that will likely be playing the majority of the season in the D league. That's just reality, whether people want to hear it or not. He has a lot of development to do and is not entering a situation where he's on a team trying to build for the future and can get playing time with a bunch of other young players. He's on a veteran team with a set starting 5 and a lot of veteran bench players that are trying to win a championship in the now.

Memphis seems to have just added him for depth in case anything happens to Marc or Zbo, which I just think was a waste of a pick for them in their current situation. Both Memphis and Martin would have been better suited if someone else has drafted him.

ETA: Grizzlies traded Leuer to Phoenix for the rights to Andrew Harrison. And fwiw..(grizzlies writers)

Martin has foot issue and shut down workouts after Memphis because. He had no promise. He probably will not play summer league.

Jarell Martin is officially the Grizzlies’ first round pick. Which is stupid. That is a stupid pick.

I don't see how's it's a bad pick. I mean developing for the future is what I see this pick for. There is no guarantee that Gasol is coming back to Mem and if he doesn't come back I can see the Grizz fire selling the team. Plus it's the 25th pk Hunter was the only shooter available and no guarantee that he would produce right away.

Leuer was just traded (ETA: see you got that), and Matt Barnes at 35 seems like more of a replacement for Jeff Green if they want to save $6 million. And he will likely be gone after next year.

Koufos backs up Gasol, so that is really for a different spot. That could leave Ja Green, Stokes, and Martin possibly vying for 2 spots. All 3 could make the 15 man roster.

I think Memphis may make a move for another strong guard or 7 footer (which would replace Koufos). Tyson Chandler maybe? Perhaps Martin is included in a sign and trade to Dallas?

Memphis is not known for developing players sadly. Koufas backs up Gasol but Koufas can get starter money this off season if he wants it. Leur was owed 6M if he wasn't cut by June 30th, which was going to happen. Instead Memphis was able to get a player they liked (Harrison) for a player they considered dead weight.

It's crowded for Memphis at the 4/5 spot on this team. I've followed the Griz since 2007 so trust me when I say I know what we need/don't need on this team.
