Look I love football and baseball like most others who post here. Saying that anyone who denies enjoying a fun basketball team that could make the Tournament is lying. When Brady brought us to the Final Four in 06' I was on cloud nine almost as happy as being in the National Championship game for football. Watching these Saturday games make me sad is all.

Imagine coming from the years of Daddy Dale when making the NCAA tourney was pretty much a given. (ETA: from '79-'93 only missed The Dance twice, but still made the NIT BOTH of those seasons)

I came in the year after "CJ" left, Shaq's SO year. The Deaf Dome was rolling back then. Now it's just the Dead Dome.

Hell yes ur right but as much credit as Ol Dale gets on here he squandered talent with the likes of Shaq only going one round into the tournament.

That also still pisses me off

There's something special about being in a packed PMAC to watch a solid LSU squad. It's few and far between, but I enjoy it more than football.

I always see these posts of "squandering talent" regarding Dale, but let's put this in perspective: we made the tournament almost every season, a lot of times with far less talent. Remember the Jamie Brandon led teams? We won 20 games and got into the NCAA with the focus being a 6'4 forward.
Dale also made some runs with 'scrappy, less talented' teams too.

Was Dale Brown the greatest basketball coach ever? No. But he WAS the greatest LSU coach, and I think we all agree, the product was far more enjoyable than it is now.

There is no doubt. Good, exciting LSU basketball teams are incredibly fun to go watch live. It is downright criminal how much this program has been allowed to slide.

A whole generation of LSU fans has no idea what it's like to be a consistently good hoops program and doesn't even think it's possible. Well it is absolutely possible. It used to be the norm at LSU. Makes me sick to my stomach to think about.

Bring back the good ole days with Christ Jackson, Shaq et al and 10 straight NCAA Tournaments. How long do we have to wait for JJ to make it to the Big Dance?

Jax, you are underselling it. From 1979- 1993 LSU was a national power. If you polled coaches and sportswriters in 1990 to list the top 10 PROGRAMS in the country, LSU would EASILY be on that list.

Anybody here ever witness a Dwayne "Astronaut" Scales super dunk in person?

Miss those Scales-Macklin days.

Hard to stomach how things have fallen and it's hard to get all the youngsters to understand and realize how exciting LSU basketball used to be.

It was an event just as big as LSU Football. Fact.

There was an actual "Buzz" on campus and around town.

The only "Buzz" now is after each loss, anticipation of when the Ax will fall for Jones.

Good thing is, a basketball program can be brought back to life fairly quickly, with a competent Head Coach.

Spend a few $$$$$$$ and get the right man in here!................

homers don't seem to grasp that the other NCAA tournament teams have some players on them that can play basketball well too.

unless you tackle someone, sometimes there is nothing you can do when two or three guys are on fire, or even one that can't miss for 5 minutes.

Villanova beat the great Ewing and g-Town. McClain was on fire and it was not even a game where he used coke. He used in the semis.
And the #2 guy for Nova had a terrific game too, making lots of mid range jumpers to McCain's long range bombs.

It happens.

???

Brandon's career was "book-ended" by Shaq's final season and Henderson's first season, and had Clarence Caesar with him EVERY year. It's not like he didn't have talent around him.

We have not had a better coach than Dale Brown since he left. I have no idea about the coaches before him.

But the LSU had the best college basketball team ever assembled and Dale couldn't win it all. That really put HIM in a bad light with a lot of the fans.

Great recruiter and a great motivator but was not the greatest coach. Far superior to Johnny Jones but no where near elite.

Hindsight is that we would have done better had we kept him longer but there were certainly grounds for his dismissal.

squandered is too tough a word. for a lot of browns tenure he had tex winter as coach and the team played very well. I think he was gone by the time shaq arrived. maybe you are too young but he had better teams with more talent before shaq.

I didn't know the bob petit days but other than that dale brown is the only good basketball coach we have ever had. we went to see pistol pete play but his dad was not a good coach and had no other talent on the team. face it, other than dale brown, LSU has pretty much sucked at basketball. I don't blame Alleva for giving JJ a shot but it's time to try yet another coach. I just don't know if it's even possible to build a real good team in today's college basketball environment in areas that are not traditionally basketball areas (like the deep south). the way the AAU works, they control and direct the players and I feel pretty sure there's lots of money changing hands.

LSU basketball was the bigger than baseball during the 80s easily and a few times than football back in early 90s as well.

I love watching a competitive LSU basketball team that'll go to the dance most years, and it's very easy to get that done....Pay a good young coach that can actually coach who will come in and be able to evaluate talent and recruit them, not a retread like Stansbury,

A common misconception, in fact I think Tex was only here one year, 83-84 and it was a very talented team with Ice Reynolds, Nikita Wilson, Don Redden and Derek Taylor that finished 18-11, 4th in the SEC and lost as a 7-seed favorite to Dayton by 8 in the first round of the tournament.

I'm a bigger fan of LSU basketball than I am of LSU football. My first LSU basketball game was Shaq's freshman year. I was in the 5th grade. That team had more individual talent than just about any in the history of LSU basketball. Chris Jackson, Maurice Williamson, Stanley Roberts, Vernell Singleton, Wayne Simms.

I've seen the PMAC rocking. Last year against Oklahoma was a helluva atmosphere. Darrel Mitchell and company's run to the final four. Stromile Swift and Jabari Smith, Torris Bright that 99 team (sweet 16) team was so much fun.

I don't expect us to get to the big dance every year, however we deserve more than this shite show.
