I commend LSU for doing this. Not many programs would punish themselves for breaking the rules. Just goes to show how far apart, ethic wise, we are with some programs (cough..cough..Auburn).

We penalized ourselves the same way for an academic tutor violation under Nicky. Also cost two scollies. The NCAA went along and took no action. It is not official unless the NCAA acts. This is a voluntary sanction.

Exactly. This is no big deal. We'll still take ~22 kids in this recruiting class.

Wow, kind of shitty indeed, but props to LSU with the self imposed sanctions. A lot more classy than Auburn, that's for sure!

The coach was also canned and the player never saw the field (as a JUCO)
IIRC the reason he received financial help was to pay his apartment bills while the slow-arse NCAA clearing house was jerking off instead of clearing him.

One assistant coach does not a staff make. His rougue actions were probably made with good intentions since the recruit in question moved to Baton Rouge only to find the NC2a clearinghouse was screwing around as usual and his scholly money was tied up. As soon as Les found out about it he took immediate action. The guy never saw the field and the coach got sacked. Case closed.
