football jersey countdown spinoff thread...
As much as most consider LSU a football 1st then baseball 2nd school (although that can surely be debated), we have TWICE as many basketball jersey #'s retired as either football or baseball. (more than twice if you count women's also)
LSU RETIRED JERSEYS
Basketball:
23 Pistol
33 Shaq
40 Rudy Macklin
50 Bob Pettit
Football:
20 Billy Cannon
37 Tommy Casanova
Baseball:
15 Skip
19 Ben McDonald
Women's Basketball:
33 Seimone Augustus

and... the 2 we have in football are well beyond the generation of the vast majority of posters on this board, including myself as a '95 alum.
ETA: and one more... it will likely be MUCH more difficult to add a number to any of these lists since it requires graduation from LSU (for an athlete).

I'd like to see Faulk's number retired someday

Did he graduate? He'd be a fantastic choice.

he played 4 years... would have to verify graduation though. He stayed, Faneca left early.

I think you could add more for football. Starting with Bert Jones. I think they do not want it to the point that we are retiring just to go it. To my knowledge it was All American and must have a degree. Pistol was the exception.

jim taylor and kevin faulk should also be retired

I don't see the jersey retirement criteria, but here is the HOF criteria (from link in OP):
quote:
Eligibility for the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame:
To be eligible for the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame in the Athlete category, the individual must have been granted an earned baccalaureate, professional or graduate degree by LSU or by some other regionally accredited institution of higher learning, have earned one or more letters in a varsity sport at LSU, have gained national distinction through superlative performance as an athlete, and have established a personal reputation for character and citizenship which reflects favorably on the University.
Oddly enough... unless it's just an oversight, Ben McDonald and Pistol Pete both have their #'s retired but are NOT listed in the LSU HOF.

I wish they would not retire anyone's jersey, and bring back #20 and #37
Same for the Saints and #8
No one player is too good to ever have their jersey number worn by someone else for all eternity. Besides, where would it end?

very interesting point... it's not included on the official list.
as a side note, by random luck I have LA license plate # "RIP 031". I have no problem remembering that plate #.

it's hard to retire football jerseys and not have several players wearing the same number. (99/85)even more then it's being done now. I remember a few years ago I believe all of our punters wore #38. to many players, not enough numbers. then you recruit a 5 star guy who wants to wear a number, and you say, oh sorry kid it's retired.

Class kid all the way. Felt as though I'd lost one of my own.

I disagree. While both were great players, getting your jersey retired forever should be a recognition reserved only for those with the most special of accomplishments. Look at it as kind of the Congressional Medal of Honor for a school's football program
Cannon is LSU's only Heisman trophy winner
Casanova is LSU's only three time All American (and he played both offense and defense at LSU)
Faulk was only an AA for 1 season. Same as Taylor who is more well know for his time with Green Bay than LSU.
Once you start letting other guys in with less accomplishments, you start watering down the honor. Both were outstanding players, but not worthy of having their jersey retired.

I would nominate Jerry Stovall and Steve Van Buren.
