I posted this on the Score Board shortly before it closed and wanted to repost here to continue the discussion:

To those of us who have watched LSU football since Les has been the head coach we know one thing, Les will happily win ugly - and seems to prefer it.

What that really means is that he plays defense with his offense. Strong run game, limited pass game, mitigate risks through minimizing high risk plays. Punt the ball, play good defense. Take the lead, pound the ball. Rinse and repeat. This strategy is pretty ugly, but it works. Les recruits top athletes and can effectively utilize this strategy to win about 80% of their games.

Danielson said it best last night when he said Les' strategy was "Passion" and Saban's strategy was "Tactics". Big difference and one I think that is fairly accurate. Les wants to use his players and have them execute the same strategy over and over hoping their talent and passion to excel win out over their opponents. Que Bama: Uber-talented and fundamentally sound football team with a desire to stay King of the Hill.

Saban runs a similar style as Les, but he has better players and does a better job of instilling fundamentals and techniques.

For the sake of discussing a path forward, let's agree on one thing as a fact: LSU is not going to out play Alabama using a similar style.

The real question is what do we have to do to win this game. There are a couple things we have to do going forward:

1. Run an offensive style that more heavily promotes a more sophisticated the passing game. And I don't mean just in this game, it has to be who we are and what we do so we become very, very good at it.

2. Maintain a strong run game.

3. Have a mobile quarterback that can run the ball effectively.

4. Bulk up the DL and LB's. Our D is built to beat the spread, that's good but we've must have a larger and more aggressive front 7.

I think LSU is on the right track with items #2-4, but I don't think #1 is part of Les' DNA and as a result I'm not sure our O will ever be more than what it is today. I hope Les takes a long look at what effective teams are doing to beat Bama and starts to copy their style.

saran's game is about 50/50 pass /run. While LSU is 75/25. saban realized 5 years ago he needed to bring in more passing and use it often enough to where it was a natural part of the offense. He brought in newheisler and then kiffen. Miles thinks we can start throwing for one game and we'll be efficient at it. Ain't gonna happen. A throw to the deep sideline 45 yards down field is not a passing game.

I agree with most of your conclusions. Go Tigers.

It's pretty simple. We have to be better than they are in the trenches. I don't know the last time that has been the case.

There is no big picture in regards to LSU's offense.

Tigger, while I agree mostly with your points, I have a question. Looking at past losses and close games that bammer has played, the mobile qb is definitely the common link. Then why...please explain...is LSU recruiting 'pocket' passers now days?

any thoughts?

Great analysis!

I totally agree. I don't think the offense needs a lot of change, just some "tweeking" to the philosophy on passing the ball. One thing I can give Saban credit for is, even though he still likes his power running game, he was willing to tweek his offense in hiring Kiffin. Kiffin's brought some wrinkles to that offense that Saban didn't used to use much................sometimes he gets too cute with it, but most times it's effective.

I also believe, if we're going to compete against Alabama we're gonna have to bulk up the defensive line. But I also believe this..................................................

We need to get away from the philosophy of playing so many freshmen early in their careers, in order to be able to promise early playing time to recruits. Alabama doesn't do that and it's allowing them to keep a good amount of upper classmen on their team every year. We haven't had a team with a lot of upperclassmen on it since 2012. Every year since then we've been "young".........and every year since then, we have a ton of juniors leaving for the NFL (although not many left after last season because we didn't have many).
