LSU is putrid in Red Zone Defense

Very disappointing numbers from any vantage point. What is making us so bad? Obviously, the scheme that allows the flats to be wide open has killed us in multiple games down there (think State, Syracuse, EMU). Something needs to change. LSU has to get better about limiting damage down the stretch to stay successful.

Bright spot, LSU has given up the least amount of attempts in the red zone in the conference this year. Obviously, it is a great sign that people struggle to get to the red area against us.

No. LSU has allowed the least amount of attempts this year. The problem is in 17 attempts, the opponent has scored on 16 of them. 14 of those were touchdowns.

It's not a particularly helpful stat because it doesn't take into account how many trips in the redzone we had to defend. If we allow one drive a game in the redzone and they get a TD, we are at 100% and it looks bad even though they only got there once.
Michigan has arguably the best defense in the nation right now and their redzone TD defense is ranked in the 100s nationally just like us, so I'm ok with that.

It's funny, and I admit I'm a glass half full type guy....but here's what I see on this:
I see a team that has limited its opponent's trips to the red zone. In fact, LSU is second overall in giving up red zone scores....having given up 16 scores compared to bama's 15.......
I also understand that there has been some confusion with new people in the secondary, and that the return of Mills will hopefully help to reduce some of the confusion there.
Again....LSU has allowed only one more score in the red zone than Bama......but rather than point out that positive (which means LSU has a pretty damn stingy defense in the number of attempts that teams get in the red zone) you focus on the negative.

Two fewer scores would put LSU in the middle of the SEC. Just three fewer scores would put LSU in the top 3. I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Alabama has limited their opponents to five less touchdowns than LSU has. LSU doesn't have to be better because Alabama has some stats, they just need to quit letting everyone into the end zone when they are in the red area.

It's all down to scheme. Lack of LB's? Poor Safety play? You can't stay in Nickle and Dime all of the time without giving up significant chunks of yardage. Way to conservative.

His jimmies are rustled because you criticized the team. The fact that our D as a whole has struggled at times against the outside run and intermediate and crossing passes is irrelevant....I guess.
You know hollow, not every comment, is a condemnation of the team and coaching staff.

What is interesting, is that we are in nickel a lot, but we give up passing touchdowns in the red zone. You would think it would be teams running on us. LSU has given up 14 passing touchdowns as opposed to 5 rushing on the year.

the numbers tell the story. Receivers running completely free is the main problem. The secondary is very often confused about coverage assignments. Plain and simple. They do not know who to cover.

Couple of things to consider.
17 RZ attempts is really good.
14 TD's in those 17 attempts is not good. Against better teams holding them to FG's rather than TD's will be key.
LSU's D has had pluses and minuses this year. Pressure on
QB had been pretty good. Getting off the field on 3rd down has been pretty good. The coverage busts in the passing game have been way too frequent.
Shore up the busts, stiffen up in RZ and force more FG's this D has chance to be very very good.

I agree. You would think a shorter field would benefit our pass defense, but that hasn't been the case. If LSU continues to be efficient on offense and put up points, the defense's step back will not be a factor.
The thing is LSU's numbers on offense finally mean that the defense doesn't have to be in the uppermost echelon. LSU having a top 20 defense with this offense is plenty enough for most games. Let's hope all phases play their best in the biggest games.

In terms of scoring percentage they rank nationally about 61. LSU ranks 122. 
In terms of touchdowns allowed by percentage they are ranked 31, LSU 127.
