Several of our blown coverages have been backs/TE coming out of the backfield on wheel routes...not sure playing zone was the problem
That is exactly the problem. There's a breakdown in communication and no one switches to cover the back or TE on the wheel route. In man you're assigned to one guy and you cover him. That's as simple as it gets.

as self-proclaimed DBU, and with the 5 star recruits to match that moniker, there should never be that many complete and utter blown coverages every single game against supremely inferior opponents.

this is a coaching issue, not a talent issue

Thank you. Square peg round hole. I have faith in our players and coaches to get this fixed.

Maybe I'm dense, but I don't get it.

it's an old joke that goes back to Tuberville keeping a bunch of his buddies on his staff that the locals here picked up on to bash Miles for not firing coaches (particularly Peveto this year and Studrawa a few years ago). Alabama has always had mediocre special teams, yet Lord Saban keeps Bobby Williams on his staff. So it's either the BBQ, or BW has the nudes.

Football as a whole has changed a good bit. As offenses continue to get more aggressive and spread out/rules continue to favor offense... the definition of elite defenses will change as well. Also the quicker the rate of our own scoring/more big plays, the more opportunities the opposing defense will have as well. While this is all common knowledge, I feel these simple concepts are often lost on the "defense is terrible" crowd. College kids are going to blow coverage from time to time as they mature as players. I'll gladly take our current defensive issues as would the fans off about 98 percent of the teams in America.

We keep talking about coverage breakdowns and how the DBs keep screwing

It's because nega-tigers only see the negative....hence the name. They don't quite have the ability to put things into perspective that LSU's coverage, other than those breakdowns, has been pretty darn solid...AND that almost every other team in the country has issues...many of the highly rated teams have much more critical flaws than LSU.....but all you hear is "we can't win because of special teams/breakdowns/etc..." Then again, you are mostly dealing with a lot of 18-22 year old kids that think they know it all...so you expect a LOT of knee-jerk and over-reacting from them. It's the old-timers that really make you scratch your head.....most have wisdom and are big picture type guys...but some....makes you wonder.
