We keep talking about coverage breakdowns and how the DBs keep screwing up, and I get that. But, comparatively, LSU is doing really well in not giving up big plays.

This is from an al.com article where Alabama and LSU are compared:

It's not that were giving up the plays, it's how we give up the big ones. Easy, correctable mistakes.

I wouldn't say that's really true.

I am pretty sure that every team can say that, though.

Maybe LSU fans are just more critical than others and expect perfection all the time and are miserable until they get it?

There are 3 amazing field goal kickers out there who hit more than 100%. #bamamath

I wouldn't either.

Couple of very important stats jump out to me heading into this game. 3rd down conversion percentage is significantly in our advantage. Turnover margin in our favor which can be huge on the road in the SEC. And don't sleep on FGs. Trent is much much better. In a game that always features multiple FG attempts, I like my guy big time over the gumps.

I was about to point that out as well.

Also im pretty sure only Trent and Marshalls kicker remain perfect. So idk where they got their data or if what I saw was wrong

You would think a team that has been as good as Bama for the past 7-8 years could find a consistent kicker.

I hear ya, but "giving up big plays" is not exactly what the problem has been. Our issue has been "missed assignments leaving receivers completely uncovered." Fortunately, in the absence of missed assignments, our guys do not give up many big plays. And the missed assignments are only so frequent and can be corrected. Many teams give up big plays because they can't tackle or can't cover. We don't have that problem.

1) the plays that we're giving up are complete blown coverages with no one within 20 yards of the receiver.

2) as self-proclaimed DBU, and with the 5 star recruits to match that moniker, there should never be that many complete and utter blown coverages every single game against supremely inferior opponents.

3) that doesn't differentiate between running/passing 20+ yard plays, almost all of ours have been blown passing plays.

But all 19 are probably really more like 30-40+

not really, many give up big plays in the run game because they don't have the personnel, LSU's big plays are scheme screwups not just players getting beat.

LSU fans may be a bit more critical but fans of their team tend to watch things in a bubble as every mistake is magnified because emotion is attached to it. I also think blown coverages are magnified because LSU can be playing so well defensively and then a guy runs wide open and your immediate reaction is "WTF?"

I was amused at that as well.

Assuming posted stats are correct, I would guess the 3 other kickers with 100% made FGs have just made more FGs. Ex: If Domingue is 10/10 on the year (I'm making up numbers), but 3 other kickers are 12/12, 15/15 and 18/18, it's not unreasonable to rank them ahead of Domingue. Otherwise, it might be better to rank all 4 kickers as T1 (Tied for 1st).

No they can't. Some teams simply don't have the athletes. We have the players, it's blown coverages where the DB's don't know who's suppose to pick up who. Man would fix 95% of our DB problems. I don't think the sky is falling, but if ain't broke don't fix it. Man coverage is much more simple and we have the personnel to match up and beat anyone in the country with straight man .

We would be dominant if we ran a cover 2 man out of the nickel.

ETA:

This is the perfect D against Bama. Except the Will needs to be Dwayne Thomas on Mulaney. Have T White shadow Ridley and Beckwith on Henry the entire game. Send Jamal into the box especially on 1st and 2nd downs and run blitz him occasionally (35% of the time). If you neutralize those 2 weapons, you shut down 90% of Bama's gameplan. If they get into 3rd and medium/longs they're in trouble. Coker tends to force passes into coverage.

Several of our blown coverages have been backs/TE coming out of the backfield on wheel routes...not sure playing zone was the problem
