Who: LSU Tigers (12-3,1-1) @ Ole Miss Rebels (10-5,1-1)
When: Wednesday, January 14th - 6:00PM
Where: Oxford, MS - Tad Smith Coliseum (9,061, 121st NCAA)
How:
***TV: SECN
***Radio: 98.1FM
***Stream: SECN+ via ESPN3.com

LSU played in two thrillers last week in an overtime loss to Missouri and a double overtime win over Georgia. Don't expect much to change Wednesday night when LSU hits the road to take on the Ole Miss Rebels. LSU will have their hands full with the perimeter play of Ole Miss.

The Rebels have two players who you do not want shooting the three. Stefan Moody (5'10" Jr) shoots 40% from three (34/85) and LaDarius White (6'6" Sr) shoots 49.1% from deep (27/55). As a team, Ole Miss is the #1 free throw shooting team in the country hitting 79.1%.

On defense, the Rebels run a very active 2-3 zone that will frustrate the Tiger post players. When opponents get the ball to the high wing area, Ole Miss will double team the perimeter, so quickly getting the ball around the key and driving into the lane can create opportunities for LSU down low. However, LSU's best offense will likely come in transition, so the Tigers must force turnovers and run with long rebounds.

In SEC play, Ole Miss lost to Kentucky in overtime on the road 89-86 and beat South Carolina at home 65-49. One of the best ways to attack Ole Miss is at the free throw line. In each of Ole Miss' last 3 losses their opponent made more than 20 free throws. On defense, you have to guard the perimeter. Their perimeter players are their most effective offensive weapons.

Keys to the Game

Guard the Perimeter: Moody, Summers, and White are the Rebels three best players. They can shoot the three and they can shoot free throws. They each shoot over 78% from the line and each have range from deep. Patterson and Quarterman will be asked to come off the bench and guard the hot hand as both of those players have shown plus defensive ability.

Finish Through Contact: When LSU's forwards get an opportunity in the paint, they cannot shy away from contact. They will have multiple defenders crash down on them and finishing through contact will be vital to the success of the Tigers.

Hit the Deep Ball: LSU showed how important the three pointer can be when they were able to beat Georgia on Saturday with 11 three pointers. Ole Miss' zone will leave some open looks from three and LSU must knock some down. LSU won't get Ole Miss out of their zone, but they can force Ole Miss to open up the middle more if they hit the long jumpers.

SEC Standings Thru 1/12/15

Prediction:

LSU 71, Ole Miss 80

Big test here. If we want to prove to the committee we deserve to be in, we need to win tough SEC road games like this, especially after the Mizzou loss.

Ole Miss doesn't have anyone down low that really scares you. That said, if Martin thinks he is an NBA player, it's time to show it by attacking the basket off the dribble. He's nothing more than an average player (at best) if he is willing to just be a shooter.

I doubt LSU will shoot as well from deep as they did the other night against UGA. If Martin continues to give them very little scoring-wise, this could be an Ole Miss blowout

Been rewatching Ole Miss' game vs South Carolina this morning, and Ole Miss can look nearly unstoppable at times.

Teams that can shoot always scare me at home. We're going to need a great defensive effort from our guards.

Well I was there when they played TCU. They went about 14 basketball minutes without a basket in the 2nd half. They couldn't buy a basket to save their lives that night. Moody has the same shortcomings as hicky. His size will hamper him getting to the rim even on breakaways. like Hicky though he's quick. Real quick. They're up and down. Depends on which Rebek team shows up.

I have a bad feeling about this one. We are not good against a zone. Martin will be a non-factor. I hope quarterman can stay hot. Gray will have to knock down some shots and penetrate that zone to get some high % looks for Martin and Mickey. Hornsby was cold against UGA. He's gonna need to heat up as well. We can win this game but hopefully our perimeter defense holds up and Ole piss/poo has a bad shooting night

Those starting 5 stats obviously aren't the total team stats, but goodness me Ole Miss appears to be an atrocious rebounding team. We should dominate the boards.

Ole Miss' Offensive rebound % is 34.9% and their Defensive rebound % is 68.1% so they actually win the rebounding battle on average. They do give up a pretty significant amount of offensive rebounds.

If LSU is able to drive into the paint, backside forwards should have a lot of looks at offensive boards and putbacks.

Im interested to see if Coach Jones thinks Darcy earned more PT. While he didn't perform very well offensively, I think his defense was pretty solid in a game where the post was very physical. If things get tough down low, I see him being an option.

Martin and Mickey need to play aggressively, especially Martin. He needs to stop shooting so many jumpers and grab more defensive rebounds.

I'm not a huge Trent Johnson fan, but I will give him credit, he demands that his teams defend. When he was at LSU there were more than a few occasions where he called a TO less than 1 or 2 minutes into the game if his team didn't get back on defense Sorry, but Jones just doesn't place as much emphasis on that side of the ball.

Teams like Ole Miss who get most of their points from the perimeter can be maddening to watch. If they're "on", they are very tough to beat. However, if they're "off" they can get blown out in a hurry.

LSU has got to make it a point of emphasis to get out on shooters. If I'm Jones, I don't even waste time starting Odo and having Martin try (and not be able to) guard White. Get Quarterman in there from the outset and try to keep OM from getting a hot start.

Off topic.

Seems like it has been forever??

Basketball and baseball are better than football. Football you have to wait an entire week before the next game. Basketball and baseball give you a couple each week.

One of my favorite games ever was when one of Brady's teams went into the TadPad and absolutely ran a train on Ole Miss…beat them by about 40. Was that the Final Four year?
