1:00 am update: He is on is way to surgery to try to repair his spine and get it back in line. Surgery should take 4-5 hours. If anyone knows more about the surgery, please chime in.

There are probably going to decompress the spine posteriorly and add screws 2-3 levels above and below the site of dislocation. They may or may not go anteriorly depending on the case. Seeing that it is 4-5 hours, they are probably only going posteriorly. It is really just a wait and see over the next 2-3 days for recovery of function. All they can do is put the spinal cord in the best place to recover- nothing else will treat the spinal cord. Any clue the level of the injury?

My best friend is a C5 after an accident last summer. Best thing is to hope and pray that he regains function below the site of injury.

Man I hate to hear news like this of accidents happening on our waterways. I really hope everything comes out alright for everyone. The kids invovled will probably be scared to go on boats for years to come after something like this. I have a really nice bay boat and when not fishing my wife always wants me to take it out on the Diversion to go swimming in Maurepas during the summer. Keep telling her no way in hell am I risking life and property just to take the boat out and burn gas so we can swim. Its not worth the risk. It has now been a year since I have gone out there and have no plans to. That place is a death trap for people and boats. As narrow as it is and as fast people drive those boats all it takes is to be in the wrong place at the wrong time against someone who had one too many and you could be done for.

So tragic. This really puts last weeks' soap opera saga in perspective.

My brother was telling me yesterday about an accident near my home in Florida. Fellow was killed when he flipped his 38' boat on the Homosassa River with 9 others on board including his wife & kids. He owned the GM dealership in town. Very sad when things like this happen. Fortunately none of the others were seriously injured. I've spent a lot of time on boats, but always treat them with a lot of respect.

Prayers sent to the young man here in Baton Rouge.

He has some sensation in his arm which he didn't have before so that is a good sign.

this is a very good sign. Although this is sensory, early motor return is the best single predictor of recovery for a patient with SCI. Wow this has been one hell of a summer for anyone associated with LSU. Thoughts and prayers to Chico and his family and friends. Unfortunately this type of thing happens all too often out on the water here in south LA. Wish people paid more attention and were not so wreckless out there

Chico and I actually got into it at one point a couple of seasons ago.

That said, I wouldn't wish this on anyone, especially someone who is so clearly loved.

Prayers. Really.
