What's the deal with the cannons on campus? I know they're special, just don't remember why.

Sherman donated them, but I think it was after the Civil War. IIRC, they were confederate cannons that were captured by Sherman's forces in South Carolina or Georgia (don't remember that part).

Seems low

Definitely seems low. But then again, they could say its visited by more than 5,000 people annually and it would still be true.

Laville Hall is named for Germaine Laville, a female USMC corporal killed in a training accident at Cherry Point USMC Air Station during WW2.

The trees in the Memorial Oak Grove were planted in memory of LSU students killed during WW1. Their names are on plaques at the base of each tree.

The law building was once called the Leche Law Building until Governor Leche was sent to Angola on corruption charges. The same goes for Pleasant Hall, once called Smith Hall.

The Plantation Room used to make the best California club sandwich I've ever eaten.

Sherman ran the school at one time. Donated the cannons

Sherman was the first Commandant (President) and Professor of Engineering - the bronze rifled cannon in front of the ROTC building were donated by him and supposedly fired at Ft Sumpter....

also, Sherman had a hand in getting LSU the original Pentagon Barracks (on the State Capital grounds) when the Army left Baton Route in the 1870's....

That's what I had thought, but I wasn't sure.

LSU's first bowl game was the Bacarid Bowl in Havana Cuba vs Havana University in 1907. The Tigers won 56-0.

In 1958 (seven years before Gatorade was created on the campus of Florida), Bengal Punch was served to LSU’s team.

The nickname "fighting tigers" actually came from a group of civil war soldiers that fought in louisiana.

Our colors, purple and gold, were derived from Mardi gras. That other team down south got the green.

Those were the cannons used to fire shots at Fort Sumter during the Civil War. (1861)

Close, came from Confederate Soldiers from LA that fought in the Army of Northern Virginia. Good book on them- "Lee's Tigers" by Terry Jones

im sure there's no way that you could accurately estimate how many people visit mike's cage each year as there is no entrance fee to see him or any other means of keeping track. How could anyone determine how many people visit him during a football saturday for example? unless someone stood there all day and counted every person that walked towards his cage to look at/for him
