Why is LSU charging for this for the NW State and Western Kentucky matchups?

Common sense dictates that you would not implement the new policy for these games.

Do they not realize people are gonna pretty much stay home for these games and not tailgate.

I guess this is a way to tone down tailgating - it has gotten a little out of hand.

Considering they will stop charging 3 hours before kickoff, he most certainly is correct.

How does not tailgating affect LSU profit margin?

They'll make money off people who do come to tailgate. Why would they care about the people who don't come to tailgate?

Staying home means no concessions and merchandise purchases.

The real question to be answered is who will the parking fees keep home. The guy with 2 tickets who was going to the game, spend $25 on food and buy a hat at the union. Or the guy who shows up in the morning, grills his own food, drinks 1/2 a bottle of crown, plays horseshoes, then watches the game on TV and heads home w/o ever seeing the shadow of Tiger Stadium.

LSU wants guy #1 to come out. I don't think they want guy #2. Time will tell if they can achieve that.

You are assuming everyone who tailgates (or not going to tailgate) has a ticket to the game.

You said above that they'll stop charging 3 hours before the game. That's more than enough time for someone to arrive to campus and then go to the game. Just not enough time to make it worthwhile to tailgate (or set-up tailgating, rather). People who aren't going to make the effort under this situation, I highly doubt they would have gone to the game anyway.

I've known many people who've had tickets and then didn't go into the game because they were smashed from tailgating all day.

I agree. But for a University that prides itself as the best gameday environment in college football...they are missing the boat.

We will still tailgate, but it will be smaller. Not necessarily because people aren't going to the game, but because its an added expense and they'll just show up 2 hours before kickoff for the crappy games.

The OP stated he had tickets.

Huh? All I'm saying is that people who still want to go to the game but not tailgate will show up late.

We host a semi-large group. Most have tickets, but since people are coming from all over with different schedules there will be a number of them that will just show up 2 hours before the game, stop by for 30 minutes then head into the stadium. Previously, they would have just shown up, parked 50 feet from our tailgate.

I don't see an individual in our group paying $40 to do so.

So, why did you say this would affect concessions and merchandise purchases?

Don't get me wrong. I think it'll lead to less people tailgating. I just don't think it's going to hurt LSU's bottomline.

They'll make money off the people who do show up to tailgate. They've already made money off the people who have tickets. People will continue to go to the games and buy concessions and merchandise.

Are you saying that the game is more important than the party?

Since when?

Because the OP said he would just stay home, despite the fact that he has tickets.

As a whole, I agree.

Another thing that will be interesting to see if if people without tickets who are interested in purchasing them on gameday will even come.

$40 to chance that you might get tickets...I'd probably stay home.

It would never happen, but I wonder what LSU and the communities reaction would be if no one showed up till 3 hours before. pledge to spend no money for concessions, and no money in the BR community for that game. As I have stated before I don't have so much of a problem with them charging something, than I do with how its being done. IMO opinion what they are charging is rediculous and not offering a season long pass to season ticket holders is just flat out stupid.

The game day experience will be fine. It will probably reduce the number of people that show up just to party and the tailgating scene will go back to being centered around the actual football game. Maybe there won't be tens of thousands of extra people around campus with no intention of going to the game, but I seriously doubt those people are buying up hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise every weekend anyway.

The only thing that will suffer are some people's ego when they don't think they look as cool because their "tailgate" has been reduced to 50 people instead of 100.

has anyone heard how LSU will implement this parking fee procedure?

I get the feeling it'll be an attendant at an entrance of a lot collecting money and giving out change.
