That's at least 3 nights of nightmares for opposing QBs/RBs

I like what I read...except for this.

quote:

“The call is the call,” Aranda said at the high school coaching clinic at LSU last week. “You align to the field (wide side or short side), not to the offensive formation (strong side or weak side based on which side the tight end lines up at). And you just go.”

It seems to me a good OC would allow an audible. It's too inflexible. In totality, the rest of his quotes sound like an improvement.

Now, we will see what the offense does this year.

Obviously QB is the most important position and I think Harris will be good but success of the season will depend on the front seven. Any time LSU has ever been successful is when we have had a dominant front seven. I mean hell we got to the NCG with Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee.

Pretty sure Key is already at OLB. Aranda has said that Key is playing the "Buck" LB. Which is pretty much the pass rushing specialists.

Man, my gut is telling me that defense wins championships... and that we have the keys to do it. Hope I'm right!

I agree.

A lot of things have fallen into place this offseason for LSU to have a very successful and salty defense.

1. Aranda hire
2. Juniors Returning
3. Tons of real time game and SEC experience for the former underclassmen going into their Jr. years.
4. Another fantastic defensive recruiting class with some players who can contribute meaningful playing time right out of the gate.

I'm pretty pumped to see what Aranda and our players can accomplish this year...could very well be a special year for our D.

Unless I'm completely lost here I've read multiple times that he will be our rolb ala d-ware if you saw Denver play the 3-4 this year

I'm kind of ambivalent, to be honest. Apparently the logic is that he wants to call plays to force opposing offenses to react rather than the other way around.

I like that attitude in theory. But I'll be interested to see how it works in practice.

I listened to the GG interview with Rosetta yesterday (exciting radio), and what GG was saying is you have to contrast that with what Steele did with his playcalling. Pretty much every play there was an audible. Constantly changing and that led to a lot of missed assignments, especially in the secondary. He even mentioned at times one side of the defense would have one call and the other would have a different one. Just too much to think about. He said when you have a player like TM7, PP7, Jones, and now Adams, you don't get in their way. Let them play.

But you dictate to the offense what they will do. He mentioned something he remembers Saban preaching when he was here about using the sideline as another defender, constantly trying to funnel the offense to the short side of the field to limit what they can do. Aranda's style is pretty simple but it's worked really well for him before. To see that work in the SEC is another story, but it's obvious the players are looking forward to thriving in this system, not overthinking things on every down and just playing.

I really like it in theory. It'll be interesting to see how it looks across from 11 live guys.

It's also really interesting that there was this idea (especially among Wiscy fans) that Aranda's scheme is too "cerebral" for our defense to pick up on in just one off season.

This may just have been yet another knock on the perceived intelligence of SEC football players. And at the macro level CDA seems to be scientific in his approach.

But, as you mentioned, it seems that at a micro level--in terms of individual assignments--this scheme is more simple than defenses past.

It's really easy to get the idea that this will be sandlot-run-and-growl football, but I think it comes down to Aranda saying this to this defense: I'm going to call the right plays, you just know your assignment and execute.

this

Last year, he was pretty much used as a pass rusher. As the buck LB, he could be rushing up field, setting the edge, or even falling back into coverage of the flat at times.

What a novel concept, right?

I know this, when the players have fun playing, the fans have fun watching. TM treated the field like a playground in his time here. If this defense is even a pale reflection of his loose read-and-react play, we're going to see something special very soon.
