The team has a fielding percent of .983.

The current record for best fielding percent by an LSU team in a season is .980 set in 2012 & 2013.

Smith and Freeman get the most credit IMO. Having only 4 errors at 3B is insanely good. I also appreciate what Slaughter did early in the season and what Coomes has done since.

Yes this team does that well. They limit errors and also make some outstanding plays in the field.

Watching some other SEC teams and their struggles to field the baseball, it really makes you appreciate the way LSU plays defense. Sure, we might not hit the best or pitch to our capability all the time, but it is nice knowing we won't really lose games due to our defense.

There isn't a true weakness defensively for this team and that has done wonders the times they've struggled at the plate or on the mound.

Very sound in the field, not to mention an outfielder actually capable of gunning guys down is a HUGE bonus we usually just don't have there. Deichmann has a cannon.

This stat makes it all the more frustrating when the pitchers are walking guys. Throw strikes and let your defense play for you.

With all the CPM hate fest that goes on around here no one ever mentions that his teams year end and year out play great defense. They make the routine plays for the most part and make a ton of spectacular plays. Players have changed but the defense continues to be a strength every year.

Only threads that destroy your closer's season are jinx threads.

Ever since we fielded 32 first basemen and catchers in 2012, Mainieri has focused on defense.

He also blew a save the game when you posted it. So, I don't think we can cut you any slack.

This wasn't always the case.

2007 - 0.956 (97 errors)
2008 - 0.973 (74 errors)
2009 - 0.974 (68 errors)
2010 - 0.975 (60 errors)
2011 - 0.969 (65 errors)
2012 - 0.980 (47 errors) *record
2013 - 0.980 (53 errors) *record
2014 - 0.976 (57 errors)
2015 - 0.976 (63 errors)
2016 - 0.976 (59 errors)

There was a noticeable change after the 2011 season and it's funny to think that 2012 was so good since our OF that year gets so much shite on this board...

And for reference, 2002 to 2006, we were in the same range as the 2007 to 2011 years. 0.962 to 0.972.

ETA:

2002 - 0.962
2003 - 0.972
2004 - 0.969
2005 - 0.969
2006 - 0.971

Gloves weren't the problem for them... Mason Katz chasing down flyballs in CF was.

The 2012 team gets derided because fielding percentage isn't everything. The team had pretty bad range on the diamond and the outfield arms were laughable in addition to playing first basemen and catchers all over the diamond.
