Would it shock anyone to know that LSU has a left footed punter that has proven again and again that he has tremendous hang time and consistency (4.2-4.8)....but bdp has chosen to redshirt him? Part of our punting issues is that we either shank or have not been getting good hang time. Its time to reconsider.

No doubt, if that's true that's asinine. Keene is far from good, hell he's below average.

OK, but Leslie can veto this decision.

Keene had a decent year in 2014 and it appears Les believes he can turn himself around and kick better going forward. I would have thought there would have been a change, or at least an opportunity, for another punter to prove themselves in a game.

Keehn actually has above average talent as proven by his 2nd Team All-SEC honor last year. Hell, last season was one of the better punting seasons in LSU history. There is something else going on there either physically injured or mentally just not there.

No. Without divulging much this is something that is and has been known in practice. Watch sometimes in warmups as well. Hopefully they reconsider here. This could be a huge boost to out punt coverage issues. But you are rolling the dice on a tf and could turn out like Michigan I guess that's the risk.

He may have averaged like 50 yards a punt in the past, but hes been wildly inconsistent his entire career. I say we move to the backup, but then again I've been saying that since Keehn started punting for us.

Who's the backup punter? If indeed they have him redshirted, it would be wise to yank it and put him on the field....Keehn is God awful and painful to watch! I cringed every time his foot comes into contact with the ball on a punt thinking "Let's see if he'll shank this one or will it get enough hangtime to get our guys at least within 15 yards of the returner?" If we are punting from let's say our own 20-30 yard line, I'm always expecting it may not even cross midfield!

I feel the same exact way. I almost expect at least 1 shank a game....remember when LSU was so good at covering punts? I think they led the nation in yards allowed (or in this case not allowed), but most of it was due to great punting. I believe that was 2011? There are still possibly 8 games left. Let's hope Les will make the call here, it could turn out to be a huge boost for our special teams....and quite honestly....I'm really not sure if it backfired if it could be any worse that what we currently have. Are we talking about Josh Growden? If he truly is that much better, might as well give him a shot.

And redshirted are handed out after the season is over. So he's not redshirted right now.

Like I said, if he's truly a lot better than Keehn and would drastically improve or punt team, might as well let him get out there and punt a couple to see if he can do it as well in games as he does in practice.

However, I should note that Keehn was a good punter last year.
quote:

Earned second team All-SEC honors after averaging 44.9 yards a punt, which ranks as the third-best total in school history ... Set an LSU record in punting yards with 3,189 in 2014 ... As a team, LSU ranked No. 3 in the SEC in net punting with a 41.4 average ... Ranked No. 2 in the league in punting with 44.9 yards a punt ... Tied for second in the SEC in punts downed inside the 20-yard line with 27 (38.0 percent) ... Had 17 of his 71 punt travel at least 50 yards ...

So he has shown he can be a damn good punter. Perhaps that's why the staff has given him such a long leash? Because he is a shell of what he was last year. Maybe they think he's in a funk and will break out of it?

you don't think they decide if they plan to redshirt someone before/during the season? LOL thus the phrase "burned a red-shirt".

Agreed he has been good before...but he hasn't this year through 6 games...and honestly...there were some untimely shanks last year. Maybe he will turn it around.....it's apparent that the back-up won't be given a chance....and it is critical that he does turn it around. ...I'm all for him.

yes he may have a longer leash, so to speak...but what about DJ Welter and Beckwith? That was pretty clear too.
