More than 40 athletic departments reported giving money back to their campuses for academic purposes between 2011, when the NCAA started accounting for such expenses, and 2014. For the following 10 departments, the money going into academics was greater than the amount of subsidies the colleges directed into athletics. LINK

So, $19 million?

This might sound harsh, but LSU as an institution will be better off in the long run if that money stays in the football program to keep updating facilities and paying top coaches.

Can we not do both? Would you rather us just sit on our profits?

No. I would rather us reinvest our profits back in the athletic program because, long term, that will be the biggest money maker - even for academics.

Donors give more more to the university when they feel good about it, and athletics is a major way to achieve that.

Seriously? You realize the budget crunch the university is in, right? Every dollar that they can get helps hold on to a professor and keeps programs for students open.

A lot of that $19 million is scholarship money for the student athletes, utilities and service fees for facilities, etc.

So it's not as if it could just stay in athletics.

I do agree that winners on the field/court can help winners in the classroom and vice versa.

Maybe the professors are overpaid and their need for grants and funding to see how much a snail shites might not be the best use of funds. There are ways to trim the fat, but you have to piss off a few people to do it.

I understand your stance but how else can we reinvest more into the athletic program? What else do we need? We're constantly building new facilities and the Football Ops building is soon to be remodeled and expanded too

We're building a student athlete nutrition center for heavens sake

This is not a good sign of the overall health of the university. Athletics are not meant to fund academics. People want to compete with Alabama, when our football program gives $15 million more a year back to academics, and they give back $2 million overall. Of course we're not keeping up with that strategy. They played 15 games, we played 12. Unfortunately people seem to think this strategy is a valiant endeavor, instead of stepping back and seeing it as a very bad business model. It's not sustainable. There's absolutely no way that athletics can even put a dent in the giant budget cuts LSU has been through.

Hard to believe Bama only netted a little over 2M.

Yes, I don't see how that's possible.

This doesn't show what they net in total. It's just a comparison of what goes to and from the academic side.

Bama could have kept 20M and given back 2M to the school.

Everyone wants to beat Bama, some of us don't make that the University's #1 overall priority. These statewide budget cuts are not LSU's fault. We can help our own, and every little bit counts

LSUs donation % to the university is extremely low.

That is the LSU alumni's fault. As weird as the aggies are, they give back to their university

there is absolutely a ton of waste that could be trimmed, but that's politically difficult to do and I'm certain the leadership is too weak-kneed to do it. So many garbage majors that really should just be eliminated completely.

$19 million over four years (2011-2014)

Not exactly a windfall when the HFC is making that same amount.
