It is what truly makes LSU football, and the fan interaction with the band so unique. I am an LSU fan and love going to the games, but every time I ask fans these questions, they either don't know, or don't give me a straight answer.

Question #1 What is the history of 'neck' and why do the fans make the arm motions during it?

Question #2 During the second down cheer, fans point rapidly back and forth...what gives? History?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Answer #1 Our ever so creative band ripped off Southern and one of the songs their band did and fans' dance

Answer #2 It's a dance that someone in the student section probably made up over 20 years ago.

I hate the fan cheers because now they have turned in to straight profanity that makes the University look trashy. Great job student section.

It's not all of us. I blame the back half and Greek section.

Thanks LSUmafia. I saw a video from a band from around the early 80's (maybe Gap Band) who did "Neck". I suspect the vast majority of fans have no idea why they do what they do.

The band members may know slightly more.

The worst is that some of the other older cheers people don't know any of the history with it. For instance, when in Little Rock at the LSU/Arkansas game a few years ago an Arky fan asked an LSU girl in front of me what the song was that everyone was bowing to (Chinese Bandits ). She just kind of shrugged and said that it was the "Hail to the Tiger" song.... Fail

Neck is actually by CAMEO. Pretty cool song if you like some of old school stuff. It's actually a old funky beat that has stood the test of time. Alot of people think it's a rap song, but it's def not.

I watched it develop from the 90s. It started with a row of about 6 or 7 guys that started doing the dance every game. It started catching on and, though it has changed over the years, it's amazing to see how much a part of the tradition it has become.

I've seen other schools actually try to do 'neck' at games lately, but it is definitely NOT the same

This.

Mid to late 90s. The "woo" part wasn't in the original dance. There was another two hands above the head silly dance, but the first part, with the pointing, was started by some silly guys in the bottom corner of the student section during this time frame. It just kind of caught on.

I was at LSU from 03-09 for my BS and MS. The chants changed a lot while I was there. I don't remember the "woo" when I first started, and now it is loud enough to hear on TV. Also, I remember that the so called "Oh-we-oh" chant was just a drum and tuba song that the student section would rapidly rock back and forth to after the fight song. The oh-we-oh part really didn't seem to catch on until 07 when it was then perverted with "You suck cocks" when we played South Carolina. The neck dance more or less caught on pretty quick, but I'm still convinced that half the people look retarded when they are just waving their arms around. Dang old ladies and their bingo arms...

Man I hate piped in music during the game... It defeats the entire purpose of having a band IMO.

Hate to break it to you, but your wrong. "Oh-wee-Oh....Ohhhhhhhh...Oh" was around from late 90's early 2000's. I remember some people doing it my first couple years at LSU.

The "You suck" part is just stupid and pathetic, but hey, "kids will be kids" apparently. Sadly, its gone now and the idiotic students won't shut the hell up with their impromptu Oh we oh you suck crap.

The history of "neck" as a song goes back to 1984 with the R&B band Cameo following up "She's Strange" with the song "Talkin' Out the Side Of Your Neck"slang for using speech with no useful result. The band's lyrics include mention of Ronald Reagan(remember 1984) and clearly has a political bent to it. The video featured a Reagan masked figure doing an 80"s video thing(whatever). So for all you white Republican frat boys(of which I certainly was one) doing your goofy dance to this song just remember it was a slight to our beloved Ronaldus Maximus. Kind of like when macho dudes sing YMCA they probably don't realize it was a celebration of promiscuous gay sex found at the ymca health clubs of the late 70's. video LINK

I don't recall it surfacing until the mid-2000's, at least not in the post-TD/pre-kickoff medley.
