so let's get something straight based on common consensus: last year was supposed to be Miles' year. his last best chance. the year that we had all the pieces in place for a big title run. the reason we didn't fire Les after the A&M game the year before is because we knew that we had fournette, a good defense and offensive line of upper classmen returning, and that it represented our best chance at winning a title for the next few years.

now clearly that didn't happen. we fired Miles because of it.

but IF the above is true, then we were expecting a talent drop off from last year to this year. we knew that in many ways, we were rebuilding this year.

this doesn't in any way give an excuse for the way the team played. but it does shed light on what should be the expectations for this team going forward.

the above "miles has his best chance to win this year" can't co-exist with "this team should be better than last year".

hopefully they turn it around and give us a season worth watching while building for the future.

i hated what i watched saturday, but the "this team is stacked, sec fricked" narrative was based on some shaky ground and misplaced optimism.

we lose two top ten drafter players, a bunch of OL, both starting WR's and defensive starters and somehow are better right away?

Mmmm nice spin lol

We didn't lose that much

In fact we returned a senior qb and got LaCouture and Corey Thompson back.

We returned our two best players in Guice and Key as well.

The reason we didn't fire Lee was because of politics.

When will the excuses stop.

And yes both Miles had his best chance to win and this year's team should be better can exist. Are you really that dull? The coaching alone was suppose to be better and we returned serious talent and added one of the most talented classes ever.

But by all means keep justifying our contineniece in mediocrity and settling.

It's sickening. We have no business being blown out so early in the season.

I'm as upset about Saturday as anyone but after digesting it, this is exactly where I'm at.

Neal, beckwith, Riley, tre, Jamal, Jefferson and others are missing on defense. That alone was going to make us s bit more vulnerable.

The transfers and quits along the o line are killing us.

All that said, Canada hasn't seemed to be what I fell for and the lack of motivation Saturday night, along with what seemed like players quitting, falls on this staff.

I hope it woke them up and they make the changes and realize they're not walking out and beating everyone because of what's on their jersey.

Many posters here somehow thought we'd be better on both sides of the bill this year

If anyone didn't think this was a rebuilding year for the OL last year, it should have become obvious once we had the offseason attrition.

We need to rebuild the WR corps, RB corps, OL, we need more QBs, we need DL - basically, we fixed the LB depth problem from a couple of years back and everything else went to shite.

Now - the problem with retaining so many from the previous staff is that they don't have clean hands on these personnel issues. I like Aranda, Raymond and porkchop - I like Ensminger. The new guys on the offensive staff have clean hands, personnel wise. But, Grimes, Moffitt and, yes Orgeron, have a good bit of explaining to do as to why the guys we do have did not appear ready to play against MSU, from a line depth and physicality standpoint.

Maybe it is just one game. I sure hope so. Otherwise, it will be a long season with more chaos. Maybe O will survive, but I see another big staff shakeup if things do not improve dramatically and quickly.

This.

Unlike most on here I understand that O isn't going anywhere anytime soon and he still has time to prove himself. But at the very least - no excuses can be made for him regarding our lack of DL depth - he had his hand in that pot well before being named HC.

Last year Miles wins 10 games with the same team if we let him coach.

The teams we beat with Orgeron were piss poor on defense.

So he gets a pass for an entire backup unit leaving the program on his watch? The OL depth wasn't at a critical level until after he was hired.

Good points and solid.

My biggest issue with the OL is A) Why so many missed assignments, and B). Please explain all of the attrition including a starting Right Guard that is sorely missed right about now.

Grimes came in here highly touted. I've not been impressed thus far.

Right - but we don't know why, do we? I agree he was the DL coach and RC until he rose to interim HC about this time last year. So, certain areas he owns 100%. Perhaps his thoughts and policies on discipline differ from Miles. Perhaps this was the catalyst for some of the attrition. I would submit that is simply the price of changing head coaches and you have to give him a little bit of a pass to let him do it his way.

I don't think the average LSU fan is against having stricter discipline on the program. I do think we should cut out the MJ testing to reflect the changing times. But, that's just me. Going to class, team rules, respecting the staff, reducing off-the-field misconduct - I think most of us are okay with punishing players to achieve these goals.

Rebuilding is one thing.

Losing by 30 to Mississippi State and looking completely inept and undisciplined in every phase of the game is another.
