Figured since we have some downtime until the next game I wanted to discuss how the bat has changed over the course of college baseballs history. From what I understand the aluminum bat was introduced around the 70's and from there until 98 I'm not sure about any of the evolutions that may have occurred. I know because of the epic 1998 championship game they dulled them down by going to the -3 and shrinking the barrel 1/8". After that I believe the next change was the 2010/11 introduction of BBCOR which seems to be the biggest reduction in production that come from the aluminum bats.

I was wondering if anybody else had any stories about how the game changed or any of the discussions that happened regarding it or just stories in general. Obviously there was a lot made of the BBCOR switch at the time and still today.

there have been several adjustments to internal pressure, material chemistry/density, barrel length/width but you covered the brunt of it.

1980's Easton Double Barrel has to have been the hottest of them all.

The current bat with the lower seamed ball has the game where it needs to be.

They switched balls a couple of years ago and it made the game tolerable again.

I was definitely a fan of the composites from the late 2000s just before the BBCOR bats. Mostly because that's what I swung with most of my life. Love that Easton Stealth Speed.

Also I've never heard of that one.

It's a miracle a pitcher didn't get killed with the exit velocity of those bats in the 90's. That was dangerous.

BBCOR that came in 2011 was just a big overreaction. It made everyone play small ball.

Changing the balls appears to have worked and I think it's gotten a little better.

Hoover was the best baseball I've seen in awhile. Nice to see some home runs again. TD Ameritrade will never play like that though!

I had the black and orange Stealth Speed. I got that after using the SV12 for a while. That was a cheaper older model that was only an aluminum barrell and a composite handle. Those stealth speeds were all composite. You broke those suckers in and lookout.

At some point -7's were allowed.

All you hear is about the cost of using wood bats at college level but my guess is the aluminum bat companies have no interest in losing their biggest clients.

Cape Cod is a wood bat league and the scouts do more evaluation in that league than anywhere else because they use wood.

Dear god. I know more weight gives you more momentum but I guess a -7 just gives you such superior swing speed that you can crush it.
