As Bum Phillips once said - 3 things can happen when you throw the ball and 2 of them are bad.

Michigan State has a balanced offense with a future NFL QB. We've haven't been balanced in a long time.

everyone knows that with a great defense, great special teams, and a strong running game with the offense not making very many mistakes you can win a lot of games. championships? may be a little tougher when you play better teams and you have a real hard time scoring.

THIS. Miles has a philosophy and a university with a recruiting base which wins him a lot of games but only wins championships if the planets, stars, asteriods and comets all align at once (ie. Les Miles being one of only two coaches in college football history to win a national championship with more than one loss).

If you were a priest or pastor I'd go to your church services.

Except the "trend" isn't going the opposite way. We are a better passing team this year than last year.

I don't accept the "we need an NFL QB to pass the ball"

There is a lot of room between a 4th and 5th year QB who is going to play in the NFL, and a true sophomore (regardless of his future outcome)

There are a lot of schools who throw the ball really well, and still lose games. Many lose a lot more games.

What?

FSU-1
LSU-1
UF-2
Auburn -1
tOSU- 1
Bama- 3

Six of those won by two coaches.

You guys are stupid. All those teams are just as talented as LSU. LSU has more hardware than 122 other teams. Only 2 teams in the country have more. Only two coaches have more.

If you take out urban and saban, two coaches Les beat to win his, it leaves you with Jimbo and Chizik. So if you ain't getting Jimbo, there is no one else out there with as much "hardware" as Les Miles.

LSU's offense-all 11guys--just look so damn uncomfortable on passing plays. Like it is a last resort kind of thing. Everybody's holding their breath and hoping the play is not a disaster. Can't win in November with that attitude.

Nepotism," used in an admittedly figurative sense, more strongly describes Les hiring his coaching buddies--a la BDP a second time--and keeping it within the "family," than the technically correct term.

What coach doesn't do this? Seriously?

Also I would like for you to run down the assistants and tell me Les' relationship with them before Les was HC at LSU.

This should be an easy task for you since you know everything about Miles.

That's what I was wondering. It's not like coaching trees develop solely from blind hires.

I get the dislike for Miles, but if this is the reason, you won't like any coach.

Just a week ago everyone was creaming their pants for Jimbo and him bringing some of HIS staff.

But thanks for playing. Please feel free to attempt to correct my grammar and usage in the future, and I'll be happy to comment on how accurate your assessments are.

No problem. The beauty of the English language, using words outside of the literal meaning then arguing it was figurative use.

And since I've never been part of a coaching tree (I don't count helping with LL baseball), I can't really say if those relationships are closer than my familial ones.

I think we still disagree on the accuracy of my assessment of your usage. I really don't think I saw any grammar issues.

Cool, let's celebrate positive trends at schools where he was a OC 20 years ago to support him being our head coach

Wait, what? I mean the OC record was posted to try to make some dumb@$$ point that Les teams run the ball. Like there is a freaking person on this planet, who knows the slightest bit of anything about CFB, that doesn't know Les likes to run the ball.

It's also stupid to think QBs can't and don't get better under Miles. BH improved in a lot of ways this year but yea, he looked bad in the last game.

Mett was a step above a train wreck in his first year as a starter, he led us to basically our best offensive production ever in his second and earned himself an NFL paycheck.

Will Brandon do that? I think so, we'll find out.

Geaux Tigers!

Michigan State was 40th in the nation in passing offense, LSU was 116th.

Right, and then people starting giving him a hard time because the team's record improved over that 3-year period of time.

I made the point that our current program with him as a head coach is showing a declining trend. RECENT years, not concerned about his entire tenure at LSU. We can celebrate his career and how great of a guy his is/was in the future but most want to talk about the program now, not the past.

Now people want to bring up that our passing game has improved this year. As if it going from really, really bad to just really bad is a good thing. I guess if you look and try hard enough you can find something positive in anything. I commend you for that.

I love LSU and want to feel confident in this staff to turn the ship but I just don't see the signs right now. People on here want to bash people for venting their frustration on a message of all things. Like we should only come on here and pledge our unwavering support for the program and provide zero thought or potential constructive criticism.

Nobody that counts gives a damn what any of you think

The past month has proven that this is 100% wrong. The people who counted wanted to get rid of Miles, but public opinion made them change their minds.

As you can see while he was an offensive coordinator, all he did was count on a strong running game. His quarterbacks were not very well-developed, and he tried to hide them by not attempting to throw the ball as much (sound familiar?). How can you be a damn offensive coordinator and hide the most important position on the offensive side of the ball??

OSU ran a good bit of option back then. that was what Colorado did with a good bit of success while Bob Simmons (the HC) and Les were there, so I imagine that's what they wanted to lean on. not the sexiest thing in the world, but they'd seen it work on a nat'l scale at CU, and Nebraska was winning big playing that way too back then, so I guess they figured they'd roll with what they knew.

quote:

The only gameplan Les Miles has ever followed is hide your QB, and run the ball until you gas the opponent's defense. He simply doesn't understand football outside of that.

well, there were those Josh Fields/ Woods teams at OSU once Les was HC (and yeah I know about Gundy/ Henson having to coax Les in to passing more... but it happened). and we threw a good bit with JRock. and he let Crowton wing it around a good bit those first couple years.

I think Les's mentality can change somewhat, but what's most important is for him to first have a QB he feels comfortable throwing with. post 08 (and the INT fest that was JLee's freshman yr), it just seems that comfort takes too long to come by.
