How much is the difference in them firing him at the end of season than by firing him, let's say, midseason? He'll only get half of his salary if he's canned midseason so that's a bit over 2 mill.

If I remember correctly from last year, his buyout is offset by his salary during that year, so I'm not sure if there is any real difference financially by firing him in September vs. firing him in December. The only thing that I can't seem to find is what happens in 2017 with his buyout.

This is about the only way I see it happening mid season.

Bobby Bowden went 31-21 from 2005-2008, including two 7-6 seasons. In 2009 they lost the opener at home to Miami, squeaked by Jacksonville State at home 19-9 (what a coincidence ), and miraculously beat #9 BYU on the road. They were at 2-1 and then came home and were beat by South Florida, lost to BC on the road, and lost at home to Georgia Tech and Bowden still wasn't fired at 2-4. He retired at the end of the season and they finished 7-6.

Lloyd Carr lost that infamous game to Appalachian State and was blown out at home against Oregon the following week and still got to finish off the season.

Hell, even someone like Charlie Weis went 3-9, 7-6, and lost to Navy, Pitt, and UConn in consecutive weeks in November and wasn't shown the door until the season ended.

Outside of a scandal there are essentially zero examples of top programs firing coaches midseason. Even if they "announce" a firing like Muschamp in 2014, they still kept him as the head coach for the rest of the regular season.

Good Bowl should be defined as a final four spot in the CFP.

It happens, but USC and Clemson are the only ones on that list that are close to LSU, and neither of those coaches sniffed the success and tenure Miles has at LSU.

Why is this ignorance spewed incessantly??? Do you all really think his salary is only paid during the football season on a game-by-game basis???

The Rant never ceases to amaze.

There is an offset for his current salary, and the buyout figure itself doesn't change until after the 2017 season so there is no difference firing him tomorrow, or 14 months from now. The starting figure is $12.9 million from now til 12/31/17, offset by what he's paid in season. So after he is paid this season's $4.3 million you're at $8.6 million.

From there you deduct for any money Miles earns in the years 2017, 2018 or 2019, whether it's coaching, talking head, or anything else. One of those two will almost certainly happen, and if it doesn't LSU will probably take a credit anyway because the contract has a "good faith/best efforts" clause re Miles working those three years. Assume Miles can make $1 million a year coaching a mid-major or doing ESPN work and the buyout is down to $5.6 million.

The last big piece is that it's payable monthly over double the number of remaining years, so in this case it would be 72 payments over 6 years. LSU doesn't have to start til the month following, either, so if he was fired December 1 LSU wouldn't owe him anything til January 31, 2017. And even then you're only talking about a hair over $75,000. There is never one, big, lump sum Miles gets from LSU unless they negotiate a lump sum smaller than what he is due.

Fun fact - the contract requires TAF to put away $150,000 per year every year, so that if Miles is the coach as of the last game of 2017 he gets a $750,000 bonus. He won't get it, of course, but that means TAF will already have $600,000 on hand after this season to fund the initial round of buyout money. They technically wouldn't need a penny from anyone til around April 2017, maybe later.

That is interesting stuff. Thanks for the info.

Seems to dispel the thought that boosters were clamoring to gather buyout money last year..
