Is it a set # of years of 1st contract?
Most UDFA sign 3 year deal most of the time....

Michael Ford signed a 3 year, $1,488,500 contract with the Chicago Bears, including a $3,500 signing bonus, $3,500 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $496,167. In 2015, Ford will earn a base salary of $585,000. Ford has a cap hit of $586,167 while his dead money value is $1,167.

Also lets say he doesn't play at all this year, a team could not sign him for whatever they want at the start of 2016 FA??

If he does sign an UDFA offer then theoreticslly he could sign his "big" pay contract a couple years early, correct?

The reason I ask is that this is an unprecedented situation. Let's say he is totally exonerated then he will be highly desired by every team in the league bc this is his only red flag.

La'el might not be in as bad a spot as we think. then again maybe his advisors are idiots. Obviously how it plays out the next few weeks will let us know.

I think a UDFA who opts out early becomes a ERFA, which is even more restrictive to the player than an RFA designation.

Albeit a huge one. Depends on how soon the case is wrapped up. He may not be in the clear until they find someone else they can definitely tag as the killer.

Per PFT
quote:

Ultimately, Collins can salvage the early portion of his career by signing the standard three-year deal as an undrafted rookie. While he’d be eligible for restricted free agency after three years, the numbers suggest that he’ll do fairly well, given the current amount and the historic growth of the restricted free agency tenders.

If the tenders continue to increase at a rate of five percent annually, Collins could make more than all drafted players except the top 41 picks, based on three years of minimum salaries and the first-round tender for 2018. With the second-round tender, he’ll make more than all but 52 of the picks. With the original-round tender, he’ll make more than all but 65 of the picks. It’s a formula that demonstrates how little draft picks make beyond round one, relative to undrafted playera. That said, the balloon payment in year four requires the undrafted player to earn one of the three RFA tenders.

But Collins already has a leg up on the guys who typically slide through seven rounds; he has skills that would have potentially made him a first-round pick but for the unusual circumstances that unfolded in the past few days. The analysis has one important caveat. Players taken in rounds three through seven are eligible for the proven performance escalators, which bumps their salary for the fourth year of their rookie deal into the range of $1.5 million. Still, Collins can end up getting a decent four-year rate of pay even as an undrafted player — and he’ll be eligible for a new contract after only two seasons. Drafted players have to wait for three.
Maybe this was the best of bad options given the situation

If Saints pull him then they would arguably have the top OL in the NFL.

Collins shouldn't stay here. No offense but he needs a change of scenery.

Why does he need a chance of scenery?

Not to mention there is a guard spot open protecting a future hall of famer for those first few years that will make him look pretty damn good for that soon to be big money deal, he won't have huge relocation expenses on his smaller contract, and he can play in front of his family.

Absolutely not. He is a high character guy. This isn't that type of situation. This is not like any situation like that. It's a very unfortunate thing that happened to someone that is his ex girlfriend. Very sad, but nothing around Collins is a temptation or bad people.

i don't the answer to that specific question for sure, but think about it this way. The didn't leave obvious holes to get around the CBA, There not going to allow someone to get paid better by skipping the draft or sitting out a year that wouldn't make sense. And if there were loophole people would already be exploring them.

Thats why all LC's moves so far have been cock blocked by the NF.

Collins should take this time to fire his advisors, evaluate potential agents and advisors and finally pick a team that gives him an opportunity to play early.. The fact that the team around him didnt choose to get out front in controlling the narrative and didn't have him in Baton Rouge immediately is damn near negligent in their duties of representing him.

This. Get as far away from LA as possible, just not Seattle.

He'd be a day 1 starter in Nola and a fan favorite. He'd probably get endorsement deals.

Not to mention playing next to a top C and a top tackle which would make his job easier

And it's just the #1 offense in the NFL
