Why shouldn't some strings be pulled to let an athlete into grad school.

because grad school spots are far and few compared to undergrad spots. i'm sure you'd be pissed if you were the kid left out of a grad school program because of a less deserving athlete just so he could play football another year and not do anything with the grad degree he was pursuing, possibly only doing so for the semester he was playing football

The kid graduated so he at least had passing grades. Why shouldn't some strings be pulled to let an athlete into grad school. Football brings in 68+million a year. I know most of that is budget but you would think something could be done. There has to be more to this, then what has been said.

finally one intelligent response! Thank you

Sure he could, but what if his aspirations after college are something other than football?

Then he should have worked a little harder in the classroom.

it seems that Allen understands this, graduating and all. Hence your comment about "if you can't make the grades hit the road" being idiotic...got it?

hmmmm.....ok I guess....Allen can go to another school....you seem to be upset about this...didn't realize he was a buddy.

people graduate with 2.0 GPAs all the time. would you call them good students? a college degree alone does not make you a good student and qualify you for graduate school. he also could have bombed his GRE for all we know.

This. Hell I graduated with a 2.54 GPA, I couldn't qualify for LSU grad school.

If he didn't have the gpa then good on grad school for not letting him in, if he did and they discriminated against him because of athletics then that is bad. It is really bad considering that LSU athletics donates millions of dollars back to the academic side since Jindal decided to try and gut higher education in La instead of actually fixing things.

Mauck was an excellent student and a GREAT person who was admitted to dental school at LSU after his 3rd year of football at LSU (he graduated with a 3.4+). He decided to try to make it as pro football player and did for 3 years and asked for a deferral from LSU which he was denied! So, he went to Denver where they admitted him and where he now lives with wife and two kids. MM LOVED Louisiana and wanted to make his home here..instead after being snubbed by LSU dental school (not exactly Harvard/Yale we are talking about here) he now lives in CO. I know this all for a fact...nice job LSU dental school..nice job

You realize there is no reason for Mauck to have been given a 3-year deferral. Deferral's are offered for one year generally with the only exceptions for family or health emergencies/situations. Wanting to try out another career first does not allow you to be granted a deferral to any professional school.

Why should Mauck have gotten special treatment?

His transfer has absolutely nothing to do with grad school

I hope this is true. That being said, him not getting accepted into grad school makes me proud of LSU's academic standards and even better.....optimistic about what to expect out of the D-line next year.

valid point and my mistatement, he did not ask for 3 year deferal (no way he could know how long he would last in NFL), he was denied a 1 year deferral and then reapplied after 3, denied again....facts....that I think paint LSU in bad light, NOT asking for any extra for him, just feel he got shaft...I have to think all grad schools seek to admit and "bend over backwards" for candidates that are academically strong AND will likley practice near the school (especially a state school)..LSU, in this case, did not
