I know of a kid who transferred to an SEC school for football in January and they’re already looking for his replacement. fricking tough business. I guess sometimes ‘your shot’ is ten practices and a spring game.

Meh.. most probably processed. We flipped a couple bigger recruits after big Joe committed and we still need to make room for spring portal adds.

Whose to say this isn't the coach's decision? Perhaps LSU looked at their roster and felt there was a bigger need or better players for his spot and suggested he go elsewhere to free it up?

He could have been a guy who was looked at as a fringe take. There was a place for him when he signed, but now LSU has better options. Or at least more pressing needs.

Not all that dissimilar to when Kelly arrived. His first order of business was getting Brennan to remove his name from the portal and remain at LSU...to likely be the starting QB...until a QB from ASU entered the portal. At that point the need for Brennan wasn't as strong and he became expendable.

It's a generational attitude in which no one thinks they should have to earn playing time. It's just start me or I'm leaving. The hell with putting the work in to elevate your positioning on the depth chart. It's going on everywhere in society. Like if I have to come in the office one day a week, I'm quitting and finding a new job. Same thing.

Maybe they made promises to him that were lies

Or maybe he's just another Zalance Heard, looking for mo money and mo likely playing time...
Being a loyal teammate is secondary to some kids.

This is worse than free agency. This is transferring at a moments notice without any permission. This is ruining CFB and especially ruining good coaches. They have to 24/7/365 recruit. There is no loyalty. You can't just build a team. It's building everyday all over.

I'm all in favor of some dinosaurs - players who RS, get stronger, shed some fat, stay with program so they can get on the field as a Jr/Sr. But nowadays, they have no stay-n-play guarantee.

If the HC can get someone with experience out of the portal, then players like Cryer are out of luck.

If someone like him wants to play at LSU they might have a better chance by gaining experience elsewhere and vectoring in via the portal later.

He was processed. LSU needs a few roster spots for DT’s and more talented players this Spring. He was politely asked to leave.

How does this even work with a scholarship?

We meet with college coaches often and tons of this is just unspoken. I wish there were ‘gates’ of either success or failure…it would be easier to go about deciding where to go.

I guess we sort of understand…do exceptional or you’re out.

I think you’re right for most positions. But for Kelly, I think OL is different. I think he wants to have, not just an old OL, but an OL full of guys who have been in the program for multiple years. He didn’t have a choice when he got here, but I think that’s his plan moving forward now that the program is established. Now, if Campbell and Jones both leave early, he may hit the portal for a starter (or even 2) this year, but I think that will be the outlier. Or at least I think Kelly hopes it will be.

As far as Cryer goes, I have no idea. Maybe he was homesick. Maybe he looked around and knew he’d never be able to play at this level. Or maybe BK and Brad Davis realized he’d never play here and were transparent about it, and he decided to leave. But whatever the reason, I don’t think anybody should be too critical of him. And like a few have mentioned, if he had already figured out LSU wasn’t the place for him, better for all parties for him to go ahead and do it now.

He was at North Desoto before Many.

He will be at his 5th school in less than 4 years. The only place he stayed more than one year was Many (sophomore & junior years). He only spent the fall of his senior year at Natchitoches Central.

A guy like this transfers because he knows he’ll never see the field at LSU.

May have even been told to transfer to make room for someone else in the portal

Doesn’t make sense with this kid. I could be wrong but I think his dad played here.

He was committed to Ole Miss before LSU offered. As soon as he got an LSU offer he flipped from OM to LSU and said it was his dream to be at LSU.

I’m guessing he wasn’t aligned.

The games just so different now you see guys that come in as hatchlings and don't stick around to improve and play as upperclassmen. That's what sucks to me. There are plenty of tigers that weren't ready to execute coming in that built themselves into dudes we all love. Dudes that blow up for a couple seasons at LSU after not securing starting spots early on working in the NFL to this day. Not everybody is Derek Stingley right out the gate and in some instances the old ways saved some dudes from themselves.
