Thank goodness....I for one cannot figure out how someone who goes so negative on The Tigers has kept this job for so long. Having grew up listening to John Ferguson, I could never get used to Jim Hawthorne's prickly style. I wish him the best of luck personally, just hope for a more optimistic voice to replace him.

I grew up with JC Polite who was outstanding. John "the punt is almost blocked or pass almost intercepted" Ferguson had a wonderful voice, but give me Jim, voice and all. I wish him the best and will miss him.

I grew listing to Ferguson as well. Circa 1986 I was working at the Eckerd Drug Pharmacy on Acadian. One evening the phone rings and Ferguson is calling in a refill. His voice boomed through the phone and gave me chills. I got to meet him and shake his hand. He was nice but very short regarding his announcer gig at LSU. Looking back I think he may have been forced out. He wasn't very happy talking about his LSU play calling days. Maybe he was just tired about people asking him at about it. IDK

I looked at that link & do recognize Ian Eagle now. He would do just fine, if he wants to do radio, may want to stick to tv play.

But he is easily better than any of the current LSU-Baton Rouge area announcers whose names have been mentioned as potential successors either on this Hawthorne thread or others.

Jim has made tremendous contributions to the LSU athletic program and LSU sports history during what can only be typified its golden era. He is forever a part of it as tradition never graduates. Best to him on his retirement. I look forward to his replacement. It will start a new chapter, a new perspective, in LSU athletics, especially LSU Football. It will sound and feel different, but it will still be LSU.

Broadcasting is a very tough gig and doing it successfully for 3 major college sports for almost 40 yrs is amazing.

Enjoy your retirement, Jim. You have earned it!!!

Ame to this.....been in broadcasting for 20+ years & I wouldn't even begin to know how to do what JH has been able to accomplish.....It's an amazing run.....

Anthony Wilson at the buzzer against Memphis State in '86...Hodson to Fuller in '88...Bring Back the Magic against Auburn in '95...Warren Morris in '96...so many other memories I can remember solely because Jim Hawthorne called the play...yes he can get "negative" but frankly he's voicing all our frustrations. Happy trails Jim...you'll be missed. A true Tiger thru and thru.

As for his replacement...anybody wanna ride for Ron Franklin??

According to the rant, everybody is hard to replace. Meanwhile people do this shite for a living every day of the week.

Glad to see him go. He had grown into a sad cartoon of himself.
