Anyone else got a little nervous seeing Smith tag from 1st to 2nd on Papierski's go ahead sac fly to center? Looks to me like it was an unnecessary risk at that point in the game that could've really cost us from getting the lead had the CF threw a strike to second. Why take that risk of being thrown out at second? Play it safe and allow the go ahead run to tag up from 3rd. Why would you risk running into an unforced tag with the game winning run about to cross home plate?

Knowing the situation dictates it. That throw is going home. It's the winning run. No one was even covering second.

If slaugter gets a hit we score 2 and make it even harder for state to come back

No. Ball was deep enough and I was confident Hess would keep them off the scoreboard in the 9th. Smart base running. Risk was not greater than the possible reward. Could've led to another important run if the next hit would've been a couple ft further left of the SS.

True and I get that. All I'm saying is crazy things happen and that was a possible scenario. I'm just not seeing why the risk to advance to second is important there. Ball was hit deep and Watson could've walked to home. But if the CF fired a strike to second, Smith would've been hosed, quite possibly before Watson crossed home.

I do not know if this was the thought process. Kudos to Smith if it was....

Watson is tagging up from 3rd. He's fast, very fast. If you're Smith and you want to assist just in case, you can afford to cause the throw to second by tagging as long as Watson crosses home before tag is applied, winning run still scores. Even if you can't count on Watson going 90ft faster than Smith, you can always bait them into a rundown.

Besides, rule is if there's a tag 3rd to Home, you always tag for 1st to 2nd (after letting tag at 3rd take off first) for that very reason above. That way you don't have to think about it.

Best point was that no one was covering 2nd. And that's what Smith is looking at. My mistake.

Everything worked out but my first instinct was why risk the opportunity.

Run still counts if the runner crosses the plate before he is tagged and that was the case. Low risk, high reward move, especially with how deep the ball was hit.

In a 1st and 3rd situation, if the runner on 3rd tags the runner on 1st should tag.

In that situation you know you aren't catching the guy at third. You know the guy at first is going to tag up because the throw will go home.

It's funny to me how coaches and players at this level don't pull "gotchas" and try to do the unconventional more often.

And that's all I was trying to say. It's a big "what if". Glad they didn't pull a gotcha.

Yes and that is correct. You always tag up from first to second if a runner at third is tagging up as well. The runner is taught to follow the throw and not run into the tag before the runner scores. It's kind of like a delay tag. Watson will score before Smith reaches second normally anyways because of the speed factor. It's a little more dicey when you have a slower runner on third versus first because the guy on first needs to delay a little because it's not really an all out tag up going to second even though you are tagging up.

The throw went to the cutoff which was near 2nd. It was never going to the bad.

In know the throw went to the cutoff near second base, but in baseball you are taught to throw that ball to third.
Also Josh is no slouch on the bases. Even with a sharp throw he would have been safe.

Cripes Greasy! Have you ever heard the expression, "look a gift horse in the mouth?" STIFLE! A good, aggressive, player takes what is given.

No that throw isn't going home. It was caught almost at the warming track in CF and Watson was on 3rd. Bo Jackson wouldn't have made that throw home on his best days
