At number 16 going into tonight:

Gardner Webb beat Purdue
Texas Tech gets clobbered by Loyola Ill now 9-2
Old Dominion wins against William & Mary now 10-1
Weber St gets crushed by Oklahoma..only 12 pts at the half
Clemson gets by Oakland
McNeese St gets blown out by Central Michigan
West Virginia continues to roll over Wofford 11-1
UAB gets embarrassed by Chattanooga

LSU's RPI is 16?

That is fantastic going into SEC play. One of our big problems in the past was even when we would go 9-9 or so in SEC play, the out of conference would be so bad that it wouldn't matter. This can only help.

Playing Savannah State on Jan 3 is gonna hurt our RPI.

LSU is 60, not 16. People who say otherwise are not paying attention.

9-2 is great but LSU is playing some truly awful teams right now. bottom line is as long as LSU keeps playing at a high level in conference, they will make the tournament.

I mean, whatever floats your goat, but the kenpom RPI is much more trusted and universal in CBB circles than NCAA or lol, ESPN.

So the NCAA selection committee uses Pomeroy?

Had no idea they didn't use their own RPI rankings.

We've actually moved up several spots in the last couple of weeks. We were 72ish after the WVU win and now at 60 with no really key games since then.

Ken Pomeroy is not an RPI ranking. He takes a lot more into account. I think his rankings are a better indicator, but there are still some early season bias. He started LSU very low due to a lot of turnover in players.

We moved to 53rd after last night in KenPom, and I expect us to be top 50 by SEC play. We started the month at 95 so this 6 game winning streak has been very kind to LSU.

ESPN has LSU's RPI at 21 today. BPI moved up to 34 also. LSU should be pretty solidly in ESPN's bracketology next update.

Yeah, I'd trust KenPom's rankings over anything else.

I'm not convinced fla is a better team than lsu yet, they are at 15 whereas lsu is at 53. Pretty big disparity. Wva is at 20 yet lsu beat them straight up at their place. I'm not saying lsu should be ahead of them but the disparity underscores that no rpi has leveled out yet. Tcu ahead of lsu is questionable. Their sos is laughable. Georgia and ucla are questionable as well.

It's nice to know they take the time to compile their own rankings and then come selection time say F em we're using someone elses.

The biggest things holding back LSU was pre-season rankings and the fact that LSU wasn't able to really crush anyone till last night/UMASS.

His preseason rankings are based off of returning players and high school star recruits, but doesn't take into account transfers (ala Hornsby or Gray). LSU started in the 70's...

Then LSU was losing ground while beating scrubs by single digits... In the past month, LSU has moved up from 95 to 53. They moved up 8 spots just last night.

All these computer type rankings are meant to be evaluated farther into the year. By the end of the year, KenPom's rankings are normally pretty good. At this point I do think LSU is a little low and Florida is too high.

If I remember right, Kenpom's preseason ranking doesn't go away completely until some time in January, so we're still dealing with that, and beating worse teams in close games, like we did with McNeese, will still drop you. We got a pretty good boost from last night's game, since we beat Charleston by a lot more than expected.

You mean 12-0 and 25th ranked TCU? Seems warranted to me. I remain optimistic that we're trending in the right direction though and I think this team has what it takes to get us back in the tourney.

No, you just don't understand what the term "RPI" means. The KenPom rankings are not the RPI. The RPI is a simple ranking system that considers your winning percentage at home and on the road, the record of your opponents (not counting games against you), and the record of your opponents' opponents. That's it. No margin of victory or anything else. The formula is simple and you can look it up and calculate a team's RPI for yourself if you like.

KenPom's rating system is completely different. It includes a lot of different factors beyond just wins and losses, and early on, it uses data from the previous season to make up for the lack of data from this season.

In another comment, you laugh at the idea of the "ESPN RPI" but that just further proves that you don't really understand what the RPI is. The ESPN RPI is the exact same formula as the NCAA RPI, they just update it daily. Again, if you didn't mind all the data entry it would it, you could easily make a spreadsheet and calculate it yourself.
