Just read the article on LSU's baseball attendance. I had no idea our program was that dominant from a fan support perspective. This may be a dumb question, but with that level of attendance, does the program actually make money? Someone who knows quite a bit about college sports once told me that it was basically a break-even operation, but that seems hard to believe with those attendance numbers.

last I saw it wasn't that far behind basketball from a money making standpoint. Basketball makes a shite ton bc of tv deals. The baseball tv deals aren't as valuable but with the ticket sales, concessions, and merch it almost assuredly turns a profit.

Yes. It's one of 2 or 3 programs in the nation I believe that turn a profit.

Which is crazy considering how little fan support there is for basketball. Our basketball program is an unrealized goldmine.

The University of Arkansas' is one of only three teams in the SEC to turn a profit from its baseball program in recent years, along with SEC Western division rivals Mississippi State and Ole Miss

From Arkansas' wiki page.

LSU's Athletic Department makes money through ticket sales, parking fees and television contracts, Alleva said.
The three sports that make a profit at the University are football, baseball and men's basketball, with football making up the majority of the profit.
"Football is the sport that supports all the other sports," Alleva said.

Yep. Mainly through tv contracts and shared revenue in SEC.
That was from a revile article in 2011.

which is why we have so many home games against crap teams to start the year. They need the ticket money from those games.

I hate it when people say shite like "LSU just isn't a basketball school" and "no one cares about basketball--it's football first then baseball".

No one cares about basketball b/c we've been losing for the majority of 12-15 years now. If we start winning again, the PMAC will be packed and the LSU AD will bring in even more money. Athletics isn't a zero-sum game. Football, basketball and baseball can all be successful at the same time.

LSU and Arkansas are the only programs that make money. LSU makes much more than Arkansas. Ole Miss and Miss State are not profitable.

Here's a report on college basketball revenues that I mentioned in my "2012 SEC Baseball Attendance" thread on the SECrant.

It looks like most of the Top 25-30 basketball programs are in the $10-20 million range in terms of revenue, although the few at the very top are a little higher.

I've heard people on here claim that LSU baseball generates revenue of ~$10 million per year, which seems reasonable to me, but I don't know how to verify it.

Because its true.

No we havent. We have won 3 SEC championships and been to 5 NCAA tourneys in the last 12 seasons including a final four.

Thats true at almost any big school

Football and baseball put butts in the seats no matter what.

Actually, the SEC released figures several wks ago that stated LSU had $9M in baseball revenues; as an aside, Bama & Aub only had $700K combined. Accepting that revenues is not net, LSU baseball still more than supports itself. Take that 10K in attendance times cost per ticket, add in the TAF fees, parking pass fees, concessions, ball park sign revenues, radio & tv ad revenues, SEC monies such as they may be & it does add up. Mabe Bama & Aub will catch on one day.

I seriously doubt that. It would be ridiculous if SCAR didn't turn a profit given their numbers. Same for a lot of other schools now. I'd say the number is now closer to 10 than it is to 3.
