Miles has done two (that we can see) really dumb things -

1.) Appoint co-d coordinators
2.) Blame the team misfortunes on the players vs. holding the coaches accountable.

We will see if the introduction of new coaches can restore the trust between him and the players next season.

I could care less if he is the Mensan of the year or not.
The man's team won a National title that is VERY VERY hard to come by. If he is an idiot or even mediocre (being nice here!), what does it say about the other great coaches that are struggling to win a title or lost a game or two to him?
Look at PC. He has got ALL the talent a team could wish for and still loses to bad teams. Oh well...the people crying about Miles don't know what you got.

Chunks of cement are smarter than people give Miles credit for being. It is laughable how many people here point to two or three things they are convinced are absolutely stupid and assume that proves Miles is stupid. Of course, they completely ignore the fact that the same thing can be done with pretty much anyone's life (professional or otherwise), including many other very smart people.

But, when people have an emotional attachment to disliking someone, rational thought and logic are hardly ever obstacles. It will be fun, however, after he has another spectacularly successful season seeing how many of those people continue to twist reality to come up with excuses why he's still stupid and not a great coach, and how many of them will suddenly pretend never to have thought that way at all.

The genuine shock would be for even one of them to come out and say, "well, I thought Miles wasn't a very good coach, but now that he is still kicking arse after 5 years I realize that I was wrong about Miles and he really is a great coach."

Les Miles is soooo smart:

He hired 3 assistant coaches that no school in the BCS conferences are even considering hiring.

Brilliant!!!!

Name them, and don't say Peveto or Mallory, because they are decent position coaches; they just didn't have what it takes to be a coordinator

Uhhhh,

Based on news reports (Advocate/Shreveport) Mallory, Peveto, and Lane are being considered by football powers Northwestern St, New Mexico, and FIU.

I can to name them because they are assistant coaches who are NOT being considered by big time teams. PERIOD.

Not that this make Miles stupid, it just a simple little fact overlooked about his smarts in general.

That is all...back to politics...

It would be hard not to be, since he's not given credit for being smart at all.

The guy might come off as an idiot to some people but I think he knows what he is doing.

The weight of evidence so far is in favor of that conclusion.

Okay, that is obviously not a dumb thing. Multiple occasions have shown that co-defensive coordinators can have success. The particular ones he appointed were not successful (obviously), but none of us know anywhere near enough about it to necessarily know that it was "dumb."

2.) Blame the team misfortunes on the players vs. holding the coaches accountable.
We will never know whether that was dumb or not. We will never know whether the players/coaches would have responded any better had he come out and blamed the coaches publicly as well as whatever he did privately (which we will also never really know).

We will see if the introduction of new coaches can restore the trust between him and the players next season.
And we have no way of knowing at all if there is any trust issue between him and the players that requires restoring at all.

That's not the point. The point is that they will see this and realize that if they do come to work here, the head coach won't be dogging them and hanging them out to dry every time something goes wrong.

I had a boss that used this technique. He used the good ole boy Mississippi drawl and laid back attitude to his advantage. The competition would think he was a country bumpkin and he'd play them with it. When the time came to execute a bid or contract, he'd move in for the kill.

Miles is playing to the media.

miles has to be more intelligent than people give him credit for. i'd imagine that his iq is a standard deviation or two above the national average. he's just a horrible public speaker which leads people to believe that he's an idiot. perception becomes reality

It would have been much smarter not to hire them in the first instance, right?
Not necessarily. Factors may have been such that giving them the chance was the smarter move. The fact that it doesn't work doesn't mean it wasn't a smart move.

Think of blackjack: if you stand on 20 when the dealer is showing a 5, then the dealer turns up a 10, hits an ace, then hits a 5, you lose. Doesn't mean it wasn't the smart play.

None of us know what all the cards were when the decision was made, we just know what the hand looked like after it was all played out. Now we are evaluating how he handles the bad result.

No one said Miles was stupid. Maybe too loyal, but not stupid. He's not perfect, but he's obviously a good head coach. I am not one calling for his head, nor have I ever.

Now, most of your post is totally idiotic. Such as this beauty:

quote:

This year he was able to get away with not firing his coDCs, instead they get jobs. So now he has a selling point to get a good DC by saying he cant keep his coordinators because people are calling them for better jobs.

If Mallory takes the rumored job, its a demotion stupid. Secondly, Peveto going to be HC at NLU is a lateral move at best.

I respect Miles for how he has handled it thus far in cleaning up his own mess, but to say he helped these guys get better jobs is just stupid.

Is he really a

public speaker? He has his moments of poise and passion. I think he is awkward sometimes though.

Saban is an excellent public speaker, but damn if he's not a dictator.

for promotions over their current positions at LSU, right?

Of course no BCS school is going to hire one of them as DC or HC.. but then again they wouldn't be able to get them as position coaches either

Small school HC/DC is the next logical step for both Peveto or Mallory.

Uhhh,

Mallory is already a DC at a major program in the premier conference, yet he is looking to go to powerhouse New Mexico as a DC. That is a logical step backwards!!!

Lane might be getting a D-line position coach at powerhouse FIU...another step back.
