I think the day of the fat 1B who can hit dingers is over.
Seems like other SEC teams are able to find the big first baseman that can hit HRs. SC, FL, and Vanderbilt all had first basemen that hit double digit HRs last year. And those were the three best teams in the SEC. If those teams can find a stud first baseman, so should LSU. It just doesn't make sense to have a light hitting first baseman.

Blake Gill disagrees.

Does anyone know what a HR is that doesn't make it to the fence?

I totally agree with you, StatMaster.

The "different era" argument is a total red herring.

Basically, it means that your old power hitters who may have hit ~30 HRs in years past will now only hit around ~18. So what? You still need them just as much. For example, Joey Belle only hit 21 HR in 1986, and he was still the MVP of the team.

On the one hand, I don't think you necessarily need power at the traditional power positions in baseball. If you can find a singles hitter who is just flat out great at hitting, then by all means, get him in your regular lineup. Just by the nature of the positions, though, you generally should end up with power hitters there more often than not. For whatever reason, Mainieri just hasn't recruited great hitters at those positions as well as he should have, focusing instead on pitching and the positions up the middle of the field (rather than at the corners and foul lines).

What I wouldn't give to see LSU get another Matt Clark type of player at 1B.

Last year was, at least in my recollection, the 1st year with poor production from 1B in the PM era.

and I think Alex Edward was projected to hit for more power than he has. I still think he has it in him. A lot of people are counting him out.

off the top of my head, the 1B in the PM era have been Ochinko for a few years, Dean, Matt Clark, and Matt Gaudet(1b/dh)

Well that may be, but last year was a culmination of several years of recruiting holes, and I'm not just talking about the 1B position in isolation.

Edward might surprise me, but looking at the roster, it seems that we don't have many new hitters competing. Some recruits pan out, and some don't, but lately it seems that we have too few people competing for too many hitting spots.

Even the players I have a lot of hope for, like Yocom, Powell, & Fields, it looks like they are all kind of smallish ... which isn't necessarily bad ... but it's not a good sign either.

Admittedly though, if all 3 of those guys are big successes this year, then I really won't have anything to complain about though. It just seems like Mainieri has gotten the team into a position where there is not a lot of hitting depth.

I don't know what happened to him, either. But from everything I heard about him, he was an all-or-nothing guy. He might hit 15-18 HRs, but you'd get about a .218 average out of him with a ton of Ks.

It's just hard to recruit for college baseball I guess. Somehow, though, I feel as though we're falling behind some other SEC powers in terms of our ability to recruit big hitters. Nothing to get too worked up about this year if the new guys do alright, but I hope we keep getting more big guys for future years.

I'm hoping that the dominating pitching we're going to have this year will cover up a multitude of sins at the plate.

Doc, I give you credit for saying that Mainieri overreacted to the new bats.

I certainly hope that's all in the past. Right now, my main worry is that Mainieri has seemed to overestimate his ability to sign players that he couldn't really get. I give him credit for assembling an awesome pitching staff and stars in the middle positions.

Me too. The fact that he talked about it bodes well.
