Obviously this can't be answered until he coaches a season, or you know, a game.

I don't know if he was the best hire, but he was certainly the most coveted.

The news broke shortly before LSU played No. 14 Georgia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Wednesday night. The LSU community in Atlanta for the game was abuzz Tuesday night with speculation that Orgeron, a Louisiana native, could join Miles and form a powerful recruiting tandem.

LSU athletic officials tried to dampen enthusiasm over the Orgeron reports Tuesday night. The school cautioned the news was premature and said no arrangement had been finalized. Still, it was clear LSU was hoping Oregron would choose Baton Rouge.

Instead, Orgeron will join forces with Kiffin, who was hired to replace Phillip Fulmer in Knoxville. The deciding factor appears to have been money. While it was rumored LSU was willing to spend in the neighborhood of $500,000, it is speculated Tennessee offered Orgeron nearly $900,000.

There was no official announcement by Tennessee on Wednesday. It's the second consecutive year that LSU has been in Atlanta for an important game when rumors about its coaching staff have run rampant. John McCusker/The Times-PicayuneLes Miles and LSU had insisted that a deal to hire Orgeron wasn't done, despite reports to the contrary on Tuesday.

One year ago, when LSU played in the SEC championship game here, rumors swirled around Miles and the inaccurate announcement on ESPN that he was headed to his alma mater, Michigan. Miles called an emotional news conference before the game and said he was staying at LSU, finishing with, "Have a great day." It's an exit line that now adorns the rear of the Tigers' truck that carries the team's equipment to away games.

This time, the hot topic is Miles' coaching staff for next season. Early in the week, news broke that former Tennessee defensive coordinator John Chavis would accept the same position at LSU, and Tuesday night, word began to surface about Orgeron. LSU will be bringing Chavis in to work into shape a defense that underperformed under the direction of co-defensive coordinators Bradley Dale Peveto and Doug Mallory, whom Miles promoted when Bo Pelini became coach at Nebraska.

He's been trying to get Orgeron for a long time.

I'd probably let him coach a few downs, maybe even a whole series before jumping to conclusions.
But that just me

The thing with coach O is he has had great success where ever he has coached the D-lines. He has put some great ones in the NFL. I don't see this changing now.

Not when using pure stats. Our total defense will always be ranked high because of our offensive scheme. Even last year when our offense was shite our defense was rarely on the field.

Chavis had ONE defense rank in the top 5 (2011) in defensive yards per play. He only had 2 defenses rank in the top 10 in yards per play (2011/2012).
Defensive yards per play aren't skewed by your offense's TOP. It's measures your defenses success when the opponent runs a play without being skewed by the number of plays their offense ran.

That may not change, I still think he needs a body of work before anything can be said about the quality of his hire. I hope he proves to be a great hire.

Don't take the hiring of Frank Wilson for granted just because Coach O and others have caught the defensive recruiting up to what Frank has been doing from day one for the entire team.

I would put him up there with Frank. Just can't say he is hands down the best hire.

I don't see why he wouldn't be one of the top two hires just from what he brings from his experts coaching his position to getting the best players to play at his position. I don't think he's ever been fired while coaching his position, always picked where he wanted when there was a job opening.

Pelini was good for 2.5 seasons. Midway thru 2007 his defense just collapsed. He seemed incapable of slowing down a spread team.

Crowton was a great hire. His offense carried the team in 2007. He wore out his welcome but the hire was worth it for 2007.

And I won't diminish Chavis. His defenses were solid 2011 was the best in the country and one of the best in college football history. 2013 was his only bad defense. His defenses carried the team every year but 2013. He didn't recruit much but that was known about him from the start.

Someone had posted his 3rd down rankings, I was surprised that even in 2011 we were ranked 3rd or 4th in the sec on 3rd downs. Without tm being a turnover machine, I doubt people would have much love for chavis.

He's already done that as d-line coach of Miami under Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson. Also, under Pete Carroll. I'm excited to see what he could do with the d-line, but it's near disrepectful act like he's never coached well-chronicled d-lines before. Unless you're too young to remember.

Great. Think we could find someone to do the same for quarterbacks?

I keep saying this but nobody listens. LSU was ranked higher on D in 2013 vs the O in both the SEC and nationally. I think this mentality comes from the fact that the O was bad relatively speaking for several years. In an historic year for all offenses the Tigers had 4 or 5 guys that got the far majority of yards and points. They were great players for the Tigers and when I looked up the stats I was amazed as well. Ranters look the final stats up, it isn't difficult to do.

I like the hire regarding Ed, but I like to see what the production is on the field. Everyone knew Ed could recruit and he has not let anyone down.
