How can you be a dual threat if you can't pass?

I wouldn't call Winston a dual threat.

There have been very few true "Duel Threat Quarterbacks" that could run and pass equally well.

TL; DR very long

I'll use just the last 3 years (2012, 2013, 2014) That means this won't have RG3 (who ran for over 2200 yards and 33 TDs) or Andrew Luck (who ran for over 950 yards and 7 TDs in only 3 years). I'm also going to only look at the top 35 QBs in ypg (had to be in top 35 of passing yardage at least in one year) to get just the most dynamic guys. That leaves out my boy JT. I'm also going to leave guys with little rush yardage but a good deal of rushing TDs like Murray, Petty, Carden and Renfree. I'm also going to leave off guys who threw as many TDs as ints like Gilbert (49 TDs 45 ints). He did have over 1000 rush yards and 20 TDs in four years though. Also leaving off guys who don't complete at least 60% of passes so no Golson, Solomon, Prescott, Boykin and his incredible year he is having.

So all of that going to leave off a couple more decent guys as well.

-Career

Alex Carder 2 1/2 years
8886 passing 74 TDs 36 ints
600 rushing 10 TDs

Zack Dysert 3 years
12013 passing (64%) 74 TDs 51 ints
665 rushing 12 TDs (nearly all of it done in 2 years)

Rakeem Cato almost finishing his 4th year
12789 passing 117 TDs 38 ints
715 rushing 13 TDs (just about all his last two years)

Matt Scott mostly 1 year plus splitting another year
4921 passing (61.5%) 33 TDs 19 ints (3600 yards 27 TDs in 1 year)
1138 rushing 8 TDs

Tajh Boyd 3 years
11904 passing (64.3%) 107 TDs 39 ints
1165 rushing 26 TDs

Johnny Manziel 2 years
7820 passing (69%) 63 TDs 22 ints
2169 rushing 30 TDs

Brett Smith 3 years
8834 passing 76 TDs 28 ints
1529 rushing 20 TDs

Brett Hundley playing his 3rd year
9358 passing (68.1%) 70 TDs 24 ints
1667 rushing 27 TDs

Chuckie Keeton roughly 2 years maybe a lil more
6387 passing (65.4%) 58 TDs 17 ints
1234 rushing 15 TDs

Kolton Browning 4 years
10263 passing (60.3%) 81 TDs 38 ints
1561 rushing 18 TDs

Ryan Aplin 4 years
10768 passing (64.5%) 67 TDs 37 ints
1756 rushing 31 TDs

Taylor Kelly 2 1/2 years (still playing)
8203 passing (63.2%) 76 TDs 26 ints
1411 rushing 13 TDs

Marcus Mariota going through 3rd year
9122 passing (66.2%) 92 TDs 12 ints
1991 rushing 22 TDs

Blake Bortles 2 1/2 years
7598 passing 56 TDs 19 ints
561 rushing 15 TDs (all in only two years)

Nathan Scheelhasse 4 years
8568 passing 55 TDs 37 ints
2066 rushing 19 TDs

Grant Hedrick little over 2 years
4755 passing (70.4%) 33 TDs 18 ints
840 rushing 16 TDs

Bo Wallace finishing his 3rd year
8917 passing (64.5%) 62 TDs 35 ints
983 rushing 18 TDs

Jake Waters
4638 passing (62.4%) 31 TDs 13 ints
718 rushing 13 TDs

Marquise Williams about a year and half (this one included) + spot duty
4051 passing (61.4%) 33 TDs 14 ints
1223 rushing 16 TDs

Blake Sims not a full year + spot duty
2684 passing (61.1%) 18 TDs 3 ints (2454 yards 18 TDs from this year alone)
608 rushing 7 TDs (280 yards 5 TDs from this year alone)

So even when I make all those restrictions that remove some very noticeable QBs from this list, there has still been a great many.

Dual threat = threat to run. Run as in with your legs. How many legs do you have? Wake up people..

If my memory serves me correctly, JJ may have been a "pro-style" QB, but he played primarily like 90+% out of the gun in HS like most HS QBs this day and time.

That's the new pro style. Brees, Flacco, Rivers, Peyton Manning, etc, etc, run over 70% of their pass plays out of shotgun, and they have been doing it for the past few years.

Like you said, very few high school QBs go under center nowadays.

Uhhh no he isn't a dual threat. I think Drew Brees may have more rushing yards than him this year.

he was a dual threat coming out of high school. He isn't someone who runs non stop, but he had much higher rushing numbers last year (just better numbers in general

also he was a 1000 hard rusher coming out of high school

While Winston is a Dual-Threat recruit it is widely commented that he is more Pro-style now because that is the system he plays in.

NO THIS CAN'T HAPPEN

YOU HAVE OT RECRUIT TO YOUR SYSTEM OR THEY WILL NEVER FIGURE IT OUT.

ESPN scouted Winston as having arm strength and athleticism which is the real definition of dual threat. Just look at the traits in the link. Look also at other guys like Trevor Knight (ranked #22) who have the same trait. An immobile QB will not have the athleticism trait.

Which type of qb would you rather have? In the NFL, a immobile white guy impresses me more than dual threats. I would rather have a qb who can stand in the pocket and complete a good percentage of passes, than someone who can't pass and barely can run. Why don't we recruit better at qb?

Give me a guy like Mett who is smart, hard working, and can sling it any day of the week over a guy who can run, but can't read a defense, and is inaccurate. We don't need a running QB, although you hope to get a guy that can move his feet enough to buy time for a throw, not neccessarily constantly run for first downs.

This thread needs to be shot in the head...

C'mon guys we need a QB doesn't matter if he's black or white.

This can't be a real thread. The only answer is a immobile QB who can pass.
A duel threat QB who can't pass is just a RB taking snaps with less agility.
Dumb question.

Drew Brees was a dual threat QB in college.

Harris has a cannon on his arm and was considered a very good passer coming out. Why wouldn't you want to recruit a guy who can throw but is also mobile?

Give me the Wilson or Brees style college QB

I think Harris, as a recruit, fits that mold
