If Freeman turns us down do we offer it to Corey Raymond?

I know this is a risky choice, but it shuts out UT and he is loved by the players. This would also appease the SJW's and their leader, Ryan Clark. The biggest knock against Raymond is that he has not previously been a DC, not that he could not do it if given the chance.

I mean why not. Our current OC doesn’t have an OC background. You have to start somewhere but I honestly feel that we will hear something today about Freeman

Idk, but if i'm Coach O, I would have CR holding the next DC's belt loop, learn as much as he can then if/when the DC leaves, Cause lets be real, its gonna happen, esp. if its Freeman, then replace him with CR, That's if CR even wants that gig

You know, with Kris Richard's name being thrown around you have to consider it.

Frankly, I'd rather see the risk of Raymond as DC with a Richard as a DB coach.

Simply put, with Richard's name out there I ask myself the question if they were both on staff which one would I rather see as DC and the answer I come up with is Raymond.

Now if we were talking someone like Phil Parker my answer would be no. But if the next option is Richard or someone who we have a lot of confidence in then Raymond does become an option in my mind. There's other avenues to explore first however.

Maybe make CR Associate DC, and basically make him DC in waiting. He takes over after the next guy, assuming it’s Freeman. I think this is such a prime gig that it’s got to be filled by someone with at least some level of DC experience.

I played with Corey and I think he could very well turn out something good. Who knows.

They main issue is that O can’t afford to miss on the defense another year. BUT, I do think Corey would perform light years better than Bo.

I’d be ok with it barring a Freeman miss.

I mean he was the db coach last year, and there were tons of busts out there last season. Not sure if I promote him to run an entire defense if his group was struggling with coverage. He is a strong recruiter and apparently good developmental coach but scheming defensive mastermind doesn’t appear to be his deal. That type of move would be consistent with Coach O’s hiring history but I don’t think it is the right one.

frick NO

And I'm as big a supporter of Corey Raymond you will find. But the guy is 51 and never been a defensive coordinator for a reason

I say yes. If Freeman takes the job we will be extremely lucky if we get him for 3 years. Raymond should be the next in line either now or when Freeman would leave.

The misfortune for Raymond’s career IMO was when they brought in Busch and he went to just coaching CB, instead of all DBs. I mean I get why he was cool with it, half as many players he’s responsible for and they give a raise in the meantime. I think he’s a great guy, mentor, and recruiter, but I often question how much on the field coaching he’s doing as well.
DC seems like a stretch for someone whose comfy coaching 2 CBs and possibly a Nickel for a half million per year.

He's also the "recruiting coordinator" but Austin Thomas is going to run that board now.

Again, he's 51 and there's a reason why Raymond has never been in charge of a defense before. And I really hope Raymond retires at LSU and spends another 15 years coaching up our corners and recruiting his arse off. He's just not a P5 DC.

With Richards name out there, makes me wonder what criteria they are using to evaluate coaches. Freeman certainly appears to have the qualifications, but did he find us or we find him?

This is indeed a valid question. All of us on this board have speculated, and assumed, both yes and no. But valid question nonetheless.

Have to ask too, does he want to be a DC at LSU? And I'm not talking about under Miles, Orgeron, or any other HC.
I mean at LSU, under any HC.

It would blow my mind if the answer were to be 'no' and that he'd rather be a DC somewhere else. This is something I couldn't wrap my mind around akin to the infinity of a singularity. But still a question to be asked.

It is in the rhealm of possibility he doesn't want his first shot at DC being at LSU and risking that black mark at his home. Maybe, just in case, if he was to shite the bed at DC he wants it to be somewhere else. I can't see it, but while not likely is possible.

I think Richard's name was in the mix simply because of Carroll's reference and Orgeron's affinity for such (like many coaches btw- that's why we have "coaching trees").

I think he was in the mix, evaluated, and moved way down the pile. And now the name is hanging around like a lingering fart.

I think he would take the DC job at LSU but he is also not one to actively go after it. He’s happy where he is and if they want to move him up great if not then oh well I’ll continue being great where I am.

He’s a rarity in the coaching world but there are a lot of people like him in the real world. Great workers and great at what they do but won’t actively push for more. Unfortunately they are passed up by lesser workers because they speak up more and seem more ambitious.

UT is zero threat and Raymond doesnt want to be a DC, he's already let the staff know supposedly.

If Raymond is DC material, he probably would have gotten the chance the last 3 times we hired a DC when he was here.
