Pomanski is right about the DTs. I said this in another thread that if the DTs don't occupy and the guards and they get to the next level then it doesn't matter if you have the next Ray Lewis at MLB, he won't be effective. That doesn't absolve Welter of his own deficiencies, but don't expect Beckwith or Garrett to become world beaters if the DTs can't keep them clean.

Yeah, you're right. I was real impressed with Gilmore and Herron in the Big Cat drill on Friday. Herron got under an o-lineman's pads and drove him back. Same with Gilmore. The offense can't have those DT's pushing guys in the backfield, they are gonna have to double.

If someone in conversation tries to pass off Welter as a "good"/"above average" linebacker they immediately lose all credibility with me, and I consider them a football dumbass... Welcome to the club DPon...

Lol welter! Probably bottom 3 all time MLB at LSU. It doesn't matter if the DT play was great or not. He is not aggressive and lets the play come to him and that's why he makes plays 15 yards down the field. Maybe if he was a bit more aggressive he would be a lot better. The fact that Alexander came from the other side of the field to beat him to plays says a lot.

Watch Florida's last drive of last years game. It is like a tutorial on Welter's struggles.

The fake punt is instructive. No problem with defensive tackles on that particular play. Just a guy that doesn't get where he's supposed to be.

This is my biggest concern for 2014. Play of the defense.

And not our offense starting a new qb and a slew of frosh at skilled positions? I'm not worried about the d. Our passing d should be better and won't face the caliber of qb we faced last season across the board.

he's said to always be in the right place, but that seemed to be a rare occurence as the 2013 season rolled on. he was constantly out of position and was beaten. in that florida game video at the 149 minute mark, he is seen trailing a WR and zig zagging behind him then falling to the ground AFTER the WR is tackled. he gives effort, he's just not as naturally talented as the other LB'ers

I'm lucky enough to have gotten to know Derek P personally, and he is a really an all-around great guy. He's been nothing but kind & genuine to me.

He is a huge Tiger fan who bleeds purple and gold 365/24/7. The fact that he's also a Who Dat makes him doubly alright in my book.

The drive is not a good one for him. Misses a tackle on the opening run, struggles on the fake punt (everyone is in the wrong position, Danielson notes not lined up correctly), next play loses his man in zone coverage. Big 4th down conversion later, he fails to pass off the rail and gets beach on the deep in as he voids the middle of the field. On the load blitz where Mills sacks Murphy, the only player who gets blocked (practically) is Welter. Everyone else gets penetration. It was not his best effort.
