Note: Bowlegs you beat me to it.

There is pretty good evidence he was one the first steroid of users in college ball.

First steroid use
quote:

Nearly a decade after he returned from Europe, however, Roy still was unable to find a football program willing to try weight training. Finally, in 1955, he wore down the coach at his alma mater, Istrouma High in Baton Rouge. But Roy also had to convince the star of the team, halfback Billy Cannon.

"At first, Billy said, 'I don't know if I want to do this,'" says Astrid Clements, Roy's elder daughter. "He said, 'You know, I hold a state record in the sprints, and what happens if I get all bulked up and I get slower?' And Daddy knew if in the end, if [Cannon] ended up being slower when he did his sprints, that basically, his concepts would not be accepted."

quote:

In 1958, with Cannon now playing at Louisiana State University, Roy made his pitch to LSU coach Paul Dietzel, who brought him on as an unpaid assistant. LSU won a national title that year and Dietzel was named coach of the year. In 1959, Cannon won the Heisman Trophy.

vacate the 58 season if he sold blocks of tickets and kept the money

I think pretty much all schools reserve a certain number of tickets per player for their family, girlfriend, etc. However, these days, it's an NCAA infraction to financially profit off of those allotments (weren't a couple of LSU players suspended right before the 2003 BCS championship game for trying to sell off some of their allotment for that game?).

Sucks for you because you are going to hear his name for the rest of your life.

Cannon could and would play today. Give him the coaching , training, and suppliments of today...he'd STILL be a star. But comparing anyone from the old days to today without comparable training can't be done. For one, Cannon's talent was purely natural. Today's athletes are groomed and trained from grade school.

Well stated.

Cannon was 6'2", 208 lbs of 4.4-4.5 lightning and thunder when everyone else was 5'8" 155.

Want a comparison?

If Dylan Moses projects on track... and enters college as a shifty and powerful stud back at 6'4 245 lbs that makes everyone forget who LF was... that's what Cannon was in his day.

Well, I guess that eliminates any NFL Hall of Famers that played before Samoans entered the game of football.

Did he refuse to play against any black players when he joined the professional ranks? Did his dental practice deny any black patrons? No? You are the one who sounds like a racist.

"FYI: Cannon was the original juicer"

OK, you say Cannon used steroids in high school and college. The steroid mentioned in the article "dianabol" was developed in Germany and wasn't made available in the US until the early to mid 60's. So there's a problem here with the facts and the timeline.

Ole Miss's defense had been keying on him for 3 quarters. He was whipped physically. And he still made that run.

Methandrostenolone (trade names Averbol, Dianabol, Danabol), also known as metandienone (INN), methandienone, or informally as dianabol[1], is an orally-effective anabolic steroid originally developed in Germany and released in the US in the early 1960s by Ciba Specialty Chemicals

Early 1960's. So did Cannon go back to high school after LSU?

billy, please show me your proof that cannon was a juicer. i read and reread your article, and have studied alvin roy for years.
there has NEVER been the slightest hint of cannon using drugs.
yes, the russians used during the olympics.
yes, the americans started using it.
no, there is no mention of it anywhere that istrouma used drugs.
no, there is no mention of cannon using drugs.
no, there is no mention of drugs at lsu.

the greatest gift of alvin roy was weightlifting to all sports without the problem of bulking up.

you, billy bowlegs, need to provide a link which confirms your hypothosis that:

good point, km. That ESPN story doesn't mention steroids until Roy was working with pro players in the 60's

It says that Dianabol was invented in 1958, which would make it possible for Roy to have brought it in to the US around the same time as he started working with LSU. It's a leap to say that Canon et al were using. Not a huge leap, but a leap.

so much of the magic was the importance of the run, the timing of the run, and the magnitude of the game, not just the actual play itself.

We were undefeated and ranked no. 1. Ole Miss was undefeated and ranked no. 3. We were down 3-0 early fourth quarter. Obviously the run was one of the most important plays of that game (and season) as we went on to an undefeated national championship.

Magical indeed.
